Lust in the Shadows

Lust in the Shadows

Chapter 1: The Dangerous Game

The dimly lit bar was a haze of cigarette smoke and whispered secrets, the kind of place where deals were made and desires ignited. Vivienne Blackwood sat at the corner table, her crimson dress hugging every curve of her athletic frame, a glass of whiskey in her hand. She wasn’t here for the cheap drinks or the stale air—she was hunting. Her sharp green eyes scanned the room, locking onto her target: Jace Ryder, the infamous underground fixer with a smirk that could melt steel and a reputation for getting what he wanted.

Jace sauntered over, his leather jacket slung over one shoulder, his dark hair tousled just enough to look like he didn’t care. But Vivienne knew better. He cared—a lot. About power, about control, and, if the rumors were true, about the kind of pleasure that left you breathless and begging for more.

“Well, well, Vivienne Blackwood,” he drawled, sliding into the seat across from her without asking. “Didn’t expect to see a queen like you slumming it in a dump like this. What’s the play?”

Vivienne’s lips curled into a dangerous smile, her voice low and dripping with challenge. “I don’t slum, Ryder. I conquer. And right now, I’m wondering if you’re worth the crown I might let you wear for a night.”

He leaned in, his gaze raking over her like a predator sizing up prey, though he knew damn well she was no easy catch. “Big words, darling. But I don’t bow to anyone. You want a king? You’ll have to fight for it.”

“Oh, I intend to,” she shot back, her fingers tracing the rim of her glass with deliberate slowness. “But let’s be clear—I don’t lose. And when I win, you’ll be on your knees, begging to serve.”

Jace chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that sent a shiver down her spine despite herself. “Keep talking like that, Viv, and I might just let you try. But be warned—I play dirty.”

“Good,” she purred, leaning closer, her breath hot against his ear. “I like it filthy.”

The tension between them crackled like a live wire, every word a spark threatening to ignite. Vivienne stood, her movements graceful and predatory, and nodded toward the back hallway. “Care to test your luck, Ryder? Or are you all talk?”

He was on his feet in an instant, his hand brushing against her lower back as they moved through the crowd, the heat of his touch searing through her dress. “Oh, I’m all action, sweetheart. Let’s see if you can keep up.”

They barely made it to the shadowed alcove before the game shifted. Vivienne shoved him against the wall, her hands gripping his collar, her lips hovering just inches from his. “Don’t underestimate me, Jace. I take what I want.”

His eyes darkened with raw hunger, his voice a growl. “Then take it, Viv. I’m right here.”

Her smirk was wicked as she pressed her body against his, feeling the hard evidence of his desire straining against her thigh. The air between them was thick with need, her pulse racing as she whispered, “Let’s see how long you last when I’m done with you.”

Their lips crashed together in a battle for dominance, teeth clashing, tongues dueling, as hands roamed with desperate urgency. Vivienne’s fingers dug into his shoulders, her nails leaving marks, while Jace’s grip on her hips was bruising, pulling her closer until there was no space left between them. The world narrowed to the heat of their bodies, the scent of sweat and lust, and the promise of something explosive just moments away.
