The car wound its way up the scenic road, the group of friends laughing and joking as they blasted music through the speakers. Mary and Jessica sat in the backseat, exchanging nervous glances as they discussed their doubts about the trip.
"I don't know, Jess," Mary said, fidgeting with the hem of her shirt. "Do you really think this is a good idea?"
Jessica shrugged, her eyes glued to the window as she watched the trees whizz by. "It'll be fun, Mary. Just think of it as a chance to let loose and forget about our worries for a few days."
Steve, driving the car, turned around to reassure the girls, but his attempts at comfort were met with playful insults from Jessica. "Relax, you two. We're almost there. And besides, what's the worst that could happen?"
The group arrived at Camp Brightwater, and Steve led them to the main cabin where they would be staying. Mary and Jessica took a moment to explore the cabin, commenting on the musty smell and outdated decor.
"I can't believe people actually pay money to stay here," Jessica said, wrinkling her nose.
The rest of the group began unloading the car, with Ed making crude jokes and Chad and Tiffany sneaking off to "get a head start" on the weekend's activities. Alex, Ed's sister, approached Mary and Jessica and tried to make friendly conversation, but Jessica's sarcastic remarks kept the interaction light and playful.
Steve and Wayne started setting up a makeshift bar, and Mary hesitantly agreed to have a drink despite Jessica's warnings. As the group started to relax and get to know each other, Mary noticed a strange feeling of unease, as if they were being watched.
Jessica dismissed Mary's concerns, but Mary couldn't shake the feeling and decided to take a walk around the camp. As she explored, she came across a masked figure lurking in the shadows. Mary quickly ran back to the cabin, her heart racing, and warned the group about the stranger.
Steve and Wayne brushed off Mary's warning, insisting that it was just a prank, but Mary couldn't help but feel a sense of foreboding. The group settled in for the night, with Mary and Jessica sharing a room and the rest of the group spread out in the main cabin.
As Mary tried to fall asleep, she heard strange noises coming from outside, and she couldn't help but wonder if their weekend of partying was about to take a deadly turn.
Mary sat up in bed, her heart pounding in her chest. She strained her ears, trying to determine if the noises were just her imagination or if there was something truly amiss.
Jessica stirred beside her, her eyes still closed in sleep. "Mary, what's wrong?" she mumbled, her voice thick with sleep.
"I think someone's outside," Mary whispered, her eyes wide with fear.
Jessica sat up, instantly alert. "Are you sure?"
Mary nodded, her throat dry. "I heard noises. And then I saw someone outside the window."
Jessica swung her legs over the side of the bed, her eyes scanning the room for any sign of danger. "Stay here," she said firmly, her voice low and steady. "I'll go check it out."
Mary watched as Jessica crept to the door, her body tense and ready for action. She hesitated for a moment, then slipped out into the hallway, leaving Mary alone in the room.
Mary's heart raced as she listened for any sign of Jessica. She heard footsteps, soft and steady, then nothing. She waited, her breath held, for what felt like an eternity.
Suddenly, the door swung open, and Jessica was there, her face pale and her eyes wide. "Mary, you were right. There is someone outside."
Mary's heart leapt into her throat. "What do we do?"
Jessica's eyes flashed with determination. "We're not going to just sit here and wait for them to come to us. We're going to take control of the situation."
Mary nodded, her fear replaced with a newfound sense of strength. Together, the two women faced the unknown, ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead.
