Midnight found Izzy and me, Alyssa, sitting on my bed, a bottle of wine perched precariously on my nightstand. We were both eighteen and had the whole summer ahead of us, with nothing but time and freedom stretching out before us like a never-ending horizon.
“Hey, I know what we can do,” Izzy said, her eyes gleaming with mischief. “Truth or dare?”
I raised an eyebrow. “Are we twelve again?”
She stuck her tongue out at me. “Come on, it’ll be fun. I’ll go first.”
I shrugged. “Alright, dare.”
She rolled her eyes dramatically. “I dare you to sing a love song to your teddy bear.”
I laughed so hard I nearly snorted wine through my nose. “You’re on.” I picked up my threadbare teddy bear, named Ted, and launched into a rendition of “I Will Always Love You” that would have made Whitney Houston proud. Izzy’s laughter filled the room, and I couldn’t help but join in.
When I finished, I turned to her. “Alright, your turn. Truth or dare?”
She smirked. “Dare.”
I looked her up and down, considering my options. “I dare you to moon the window.”
Her eyes widened, but she didn’t back down. Standing up, she pulled down her pants, revealing her underwear. I stifled a giggle as she bent over and waved her backside at the window. I quickly grabbed my phone and started recording, knowing this was a moment I’d want to remember.
“Your turn,” Izzy said, pulling up her pants and sitting back down on the bed.
I grinned. “Dare.”
She rolled her eyes. “I dare you to do a silly dance.”
I stood up and launched into a raunchy striptease, complete with hip thrusts and hair flips. Izzy blushed and looked away, but I could see the corner of her mouth twitching in amusement.
When I finished, I was standing in nothing but my bra and underwear. I looked over at Izzy, who was still fully clothed. “Want to take a break?” I suggested.
She looked relieved. “Yeah, maybe that’s a good idea.”
I poured myself another glass of wine and refilled Izzy’s. We sat in comfortable silence for a few minutes, enjoying the warmth of the wine and the coolness of the air conditioning.
“Alright, your turn again,” Izzy said, breaking the silence.
I grinned. “Dare.”
She sighed. “Fine. I dare you to call a random number and serenade the person who answers.”
I grabbed my phone and dialed a random number. A woman answered, and I launched into a slurred rendition of “I Want It That Way” before she could say anything. She hung up quickly, but I didn’t care. I was having too much fun.
“One more,” I said, feeling slightly drunk. “Dare.”
Izzy looked uncomfortable. “I don’t know, Alyssa. Maybe we should switch to truth.”
I pouted. “Fine. Truth. Who’s your biggest crush?”
She rolled her eyes. “It’s that boy from school, the one with the curly hair and the cute smile.”
I grinned. “Ooh, I know who you’re talking about. He’s cute.”
She looked away. “Whatever. Your turn again.”
I grinned. “Dare.”
Izzy looked tired. “Fine. I dare you to clean your room.”
I pouted. “That’s not fun.”
She looked at me sternly. “Do it, Alyssa.”
Sighing, I started picking up clothes and putting them in the hamper. Izzy sat on the bed, watching me with a mixture of amusement and exasperation.
When I finished, I was dressed again. I looked over at Izzy. “Want to play another game?”
She shook her head. “No, I should go home.”
I walked her to the door and hugged her goodbye. As she left, I smiled to myself, already planning to post the videos online. After all, what were best friends for if not to provide a little entertainment?
