Midnight Hunt in the Woods

### Chapter One: Midnight Mischief

The suburban street was a quiet beast at midnight, its flickering streetlights casting long, jagged shadows across the cracked pavement. Ethan slouched against a lamppost, his leather jacket slung over one shoulder, a cigarette dangling lazily from his lips. He wasn’t supposed to be here—hell, he wasn’t supposed to be anywhere—but trouble had a way of finding him, or maybe he had a way of sniffing it out. Either way, the night was young, and his blood was itching for something to chase.

That’s when he saw her.

Lila.

She strode down the street like she owned every inch of it, her heels clicking with a rhythm that could stop a man’s heart. Her curves were a dangerous map, each sway of her hips a dare, wrapped in a tight black dress that clung to her like a second skin. Her dark hair spilled over her shoulders, catching the dim light, and Ethan felt a jolt—part desire, part mischief—electrify his spine. He flicked his cigarette to the ground, grinding it under his boot, his smirk curling like smoke.

“Well, damn,” he muttered to himself, eyes tracking her every move. “Where’s a goddess like that headed at this hour?”

As if on cue, Lila veered off the sidewalk, her confident stride unbroken as she slipped onto a shadowy forest path that snaked into the dense woods bordering the neighborhood. Ethan’s brows shot up. The path was a shortcut, sure, but not one most people took after dark—especially not women alone. His curiosity gnawed at him, tangled with something hotter, something primal. He shoved his hands into his pockets, his pulse quickening.

“Guess I’m playing hero tonight,” he chuckled under his breath, though the glint in his hazel eyes was anything but noble. He started after her, his boots scuffing softly against the pavement before the crunch of leaves took over. The forest swallowed the streetlight’s glow, wrapping him in a cool, inky darkness. The air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, and somewhere ahead, Lila’s silhouette flickered between the trees.

Ethan’s mind raced as he closed the gap, his heart thumping a reckless beat. What was the plan here? Charm her? Scare her just enough to play the savior? He wasn’t sure, but the thrill of the chase had him hooked. He imagined her turning, those piercing eyes—green, he bet, or maybe blue—locking onto him, her lips parting in surprise… or maybe a smirk. God, he hoped for a smirk.

He was so lost in his fantasy that he didn’t notice how quiet the woods had gotten. No owls, no rustling critters—just the faint crunch of his own steps… and then, nothing. He stopped, frowning, peering into the darkness. Where the hell had she gone? His breath hitched, a prickle of unease crawling up his neck.

“Looking for someone, sweetheart?” a voice purred from behind him, sharp and smooth as a blade.

Ethan spun around, nearly tripping over a root, to find Lila leaning casually against a tree, arms crossed, one hip cocked in a way that made his throat go dry. Up close, she was even more devastating—high cheekbones, full lips painted a wicked shade of red, and eyes that glittered like emeralds in the faint moonlight. But it wasn’t just her beauty that stopped him cold; it was the way she looked at him, like a cat sizing up a particularly stupid mouse.

“Uh… hey,” he managed, flashing what he hoped was a disarming grin. “Didn’t mean to startle you. Just saw you head in here and thought, you know, pretty lady, dark woods—maybe you could use some company.”

Lila’s lips twitched, but it wasn’t a smile. It was a weapon. She pushed off the tree, stepping closer, her heels somehow silent on the forest floor. “Oh, I’m touched,” she drawled, her voice dripping with mock sweetness. “A knight in shining… what is that, cheap leather? Here to save me from the big bad wolves?”

Ethan blinked, caught off guard by the bite in her tone. He scratched the back of his neck, trying to recover. “Hey now, I’m just being neighborly. Name’s Ethan. And you are…?”

“Fully aware you’ve been tailing me since the street,” she cut in, her gaze pinning him in place. She took another step, close enough that he could smell her perfume—something dark and spicy that made his head swim. “So let’s skip the bullshit, Ethan. What’s your game? Trying to play the creep, or just hoping I’ll swoon into your arms?”

His smirk faltered, but he rallied, leaning in just a fraction, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial murmur. “Can’t a guy admire a view without getting the third degree? I mean, look at you—walking through a damn forest at midnight like you own the shadows. I’m intrigued, darlin’. Sue me.”

Lila laughed, a low, throaty sound that sent a shiver down his spine. “Oh, I’ll do more than sue you if you keep up the ‘darlin’’’ crap,” she said, her eyes flashing with amusement and something sharper. She tilted her head, studying him like he was a puzzle she’d already solved. “You’ve got ten seconds to convince me you’re not just some horny idiot looking for a cheap thrill. Go.”

Ethan’s mouth opened, then closed. He wasn’t used to being on the back foot, especially not with a woman who seemed to hold all the cards without even trying. But damn if it didn’t light a fire under him. “Alright, fine,” he said, holding up his hands in mock surrender. “I’ll level with you. I saw you, and yeah, I couldn’t look away. But I’m not some creep—I’m just a guy who knows a bad idea when he sees one. This path ain’t safe, and I figured I’d make sure you got through it in one piece. That’s it.”

Lila arched a brow, unimpressed. “So noble,” she mocked, circling him slowly, her gaze raking over him with a mix of disdain and curiosity. “And here I thought you were just chasing tail. Tell me, Ethan, do you always stalk women to ‘protect’ them, or am I just lucky?”

He grinned, despite himself, the challenge in her words stoking something reckless in him. “Only the ones who look like they could kick my ass and still make me thank them for it.”

That earned him a real smile, though it was edged with danger. She stopped in front of him, close enough that their breaths mingled in the cool night air. “Careful, sweetheart,” she purred, echoing his earlier tone with a twist of venom. “You’re playing a game you don’t even know the rules to. I don’t need saving, and I sure as hell don’t need you tripping over your own feet trying to impress me.”

Ethan swallowed hard, his bravado slipping under the weight of her stare. “Noted,” he said, his voice rougher than he intended. “So what do you need, then? ‘Cause I’m all ears… and other things, if you’re asking.”

Her laugh cut through the darkness again, sharp and commanding. “Oh, you’re bold, I’ll give you that,” she said, stepping back just enough to leave him aching for her proximity. “But if you think you’re in control here, you’ve got a lot to learn. Stick around, Ethan. I might just teach you a thing or two—if you can keep up.”

With that, she turned on her heel, her silhouette melting back into the shadows of the path, leaving him standing there, heart pounding, mouth dry, and utterly, hopelessly hooked. Her voice lingered in the air, a promise and a threat all at once, and Ethan knew he’d just stumbled into something far more dangerous—and far more thrilling—than he’d bargained for.
