Miles shuffled onto the bus, his backpack slung over one shoulder, the weight of it matching the heaviness in his heart. His mom's enthusiastic wave from the curb did little to lift his spirits. "Have fun, sweetie!" she called out, but Miles could only manage a half-hearted wave back. The bus was filled with the buzz of excited chatter, a stark contrast to his mood. Counselors, with their overly cheerful smiles and matching polo shirts, were already in full swing, delivering a preppy welcome speech that grated on Miles' nerves.
"Great, just what I need," he muttered under his breath, sliding into an empty seat and wishing he could be anywhere else but here. The thought of spending a week at a vacation house, surrounded by strangers, was about as appealing as a root canal. He dug into his backpack, pulling out his trusty 3DS. If he was going to survive this trip, Super Mario 3D Land was going to be his lifeline.
As he navigated Mario through treacherous platforms, his concentration was intense, a bubble of focus amidst the chaos of the bus. Unbeknownst to him, three pairs of eyes were fixed on him from a few seats back. Kayla, Kirsten, and Kylee, with their heads close together, whispered and giggled, their attention caught by the cute boy so absorbed in his game.
"Look at him, all serious and stuff," Kayla said, her voice a hushed tease.
"Yeah, he's like, totally in the zone," Kirsten added, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
Kylee grinned, leaning forward slightly. "He's kind of adorable, don't you think?"
The girls watched as Miles, oblivious to their scrutiny, expertly maneuvered Mario through a challenging level. When he finally beat it, a triumphant smile spread across his face, and the girls couldn't help but be impressed.
"Wow, he's good," Kayla murmured, her admiration clear.
As the bus journey stretched into the night, the gentle hum of the engine lulled Miles into a deep sleep, his 3DS still clutched in his hands. It was then that the girls decided to make their move. Tiptoeing up to him, they carefully placed a big bag of gummy worms and sour patch kids on his lap, their faces lighting up with delight at their sweet gesture.
In the middle of the night, Miles stirred, his eyes fluttering open to find the unexpected treasure on his lap. Without hesitation, he tore into the bag, the sweet and sour flavors exploding in his mouth, bringing a genuine smile to his face. From their seats, the girls watched, their giggles barely contained as they saw their plan come to fruition.
"He's like a kid in a candy store," Kirsten whispered, her voice filled with amusement.
By the time Miles finished the candy, his smile was wide and content, and he drifted back to sleep, the sweetness lingering on his tongue.
The next day, as the bus pulled up to the vacation house, the girls kept a close eye on Miles as he slept in his room, his peaceful expression making them swoon. Unable to resist, they knocked on his door and burst in, their voices high and excited.
"Hiiiiiiii!" they squealed in unison, watching as Miles jolted awake, blinking in confusion.
"We're the ones who gave you the candy last night," Kayla announced, her voice brimming with pride.
Miles, still groggy but pleasantly surprised, managed a grateful smile. "Thanks, it was really yummy."
The girls' faces lit up, their enthusiasm infectious. "I know, right?!" they chorused, their laughter filling the room.
As they chatted and laughed, the playful and caring dynamic between them began to take shape, setting the stage for what was sure to be an unforgettable vacation.
