Lake sat on the edge of the bathtub, her legs dangling over the side, as she stared at the pill bottle in her hand. She turned it over and over, the white pills rattling against the plastic, as she contemplated her actions. It would be so easy, she thought, to just take them all and end the constant ache that had become her existence.
She looked up at her reflection in the mirror, her dark eyes sunken and tired. She had always been the quiet one, the overlooked twin, always living in the shadow of her more outgoing brother, Lucas. And as much as she loved him, she couldn't help but feel a pang of resentment.
Lake stood up and walked over to the sink, her movements slow and deliberate. She looked at herself in the mirror, her long brown hair falling in waves around her shoulders, her thin frame looking almost ghostly. She couldn't help but feel like no one would care if she was gone.
She opened the pill bottle and poured out the pills onto the counter, the sound of them hitting the marble echoing in the small bathroom. She hesitated for a moment, her hand hovering over the pile of pills. Was she really ready to do this?
Before she could make a decision, there was a knock on the bathroom door. "Lake? Are you in there?" It was Ms. J, the teacher assigned to check on her since she had been in the bathroom for so long.
Lake quickly hid the pill bottle and tried to compose herself. She took a deep breath and called out, "Yes, Ms. J. I'm fine."
Ms. J didn't believe her and entered the bathroom, finding Lake on the floor, looking pale and weak. "Lake, what's going on? Are you okay?"
Lake tried to reassure her, insisting that she was fine and that it was just a stupid mistake. But Ms. J wasn't buying it. She immediately noticed the pills scattered on the counter and the empty bottle next to Lake.
"Lake, this is not a joke. You need to take this seriously." Ms. J's voice was stern, but there was a hint of concern in her eyes.
Lake couldn't help but feel a little touched by Ms. J's words. She realized that maybe she did deserve to be happy and that she didn't have to let her circumstances define her.
As they waited for the ambulance, Lake and Ms. J engaged in a playful banter, with Ms. J calling Lake a "drama queen" and Lake firing back with a witty retort. It was a welcome distraction from the heavy emotions of the day.
At the hospital, Lake was given a full examination and was told that she would be fine. She was put on suicide watch and was given counseling sessions.
As she lay in her hospital bed, Lake reflected on the day's events. She realized that she had people who cared about her and that she didn't have to go through life alone. She vowed to make a change and to start taking control of her own life.
The end.
