Yona, Minji, Kim, Hye, and Meon were escorted into the maximum security rehabilitation prison for women, their hearts pounding in their chests. They looked around at the rows of naked women sitting quietly in the intake area, their eyes wide with fear and uncertainty.
"Well, at least we won't have to worry about doing laundry for the next four years," Yona joked, trying to lighten the mood. Minji laughed, but Kim and Hye looked worried.
The guards told them to strip off their clothes, and the girls hesitated. But the guards made it clear that they had no choice. As they undressed, Yona cracked another joke, but the others were too nervous to laugh.
Once they were naked, the girls were led to a small cell where they would be living with six other prisoners. They were shown the small toilet in the corner of the cell and handed rough, scratchy blankets. They would be locked in the cell for 23 hours a day, only allowed out for one hour for a rehabilitation program that was meant to shame and humiliate them.
As they tried to get comfortable on the hard bunks, Yona started making up a silly song about their new life in prison. Minji joined in, and soon the other girls in the cell were laughing and clapping along.
But the guards soon came by to handcuff the girls, and Yona made a show of trying to seduce one of them. He rolled his eyes and told her to cut it out.
As the girls settled in for the night, they could hear the sounds of other prisoners crying and moaning in the cells around them. Yona whispered to Minji that they needed to stick together and find a way to make the best of this terrible situation.
The next morning, the girls were awoken early for their first rehabilitation session. They were marched out of the cell naked and handcuffed, and they could feel the eyes of the other prisoners on them.
The rehabilitation session was led by a stern-faced woman who told the girls that they would be degraded and shamed in order to build a new Korea. Yona muttered under her breath that this was more like building a new hell.
The girls were forced to perform humiliating tasks, such as cleaning the floors on their hands and knees. Yona tried to make light of the situation by making suggestive comments, but the other girls were too scared to laugh.
As the session came to a close, the girls were led back to their cell. They were exhausted and humiliated, but they tried to keep their spirits up by talking and laughing together.
Yona started telling stories about her wild days at university, and the other girls laughed and groaned at her outrageous antics. As they drifted off to sleep, Yona whispered to Minji that they needed to find a way to escape this place. Minji nodded, but they both knew that it wouldn't be easy.
The chapter ended with the girls huddled together on their bunks, determined to survive the next four years and find a way to freedom.
