Neighborly Desires

Neighborly Desires

Chapter 1: The Heat of the Glance

Mia leaned against her kitchen counter, a glass of chilled white wine in hand, staring out her apartment window into the sultry haze of the city summer. The stress of her latest corporate case clung to her like a second skin, but her gaze wasn’t on the skyline. It was on him. Jake. Her new neighbor. The man who’d moved in two weeks ago and had already become the star of her late-night fantasies.

He was out there on his balcony, shirtless, sweat glistening on his chiseled chest as he lifted weights under the setting sun. Every flex of his biceps, every ripple of his abs, sent a jolt straight through Mia’s core. She bit her lip, her grip tightening on the glass. 'Get a grip, Mia,' she muttered to herself. 'You’re a damn lawyer, not a horny teenager.'

But then Jake paused, wiping his brow with a towel, and his eyes flicked up—straight to her window. Their gazes locked. Mia’s breath hitched, but she didn’t flinch. She wasn’t the type to back down from a challenge, even one as dangerously enticing as this. A slow, wicked smirk curled on Jake’s lips, and he gave a subtle nod, as if daring her to keep watching.

'Oh, you think you’ve got me figured out, don’t you?' Mia whispered under her breath, her voice dripping with defiance. She set her glass down with a deliberate clink and leaned forward, resting her elbows on the counter, letting him see the curve of her silhouette in her tight tank top. Two could play this game.

Jake’s smirk widened. He dropped the towel, stepping closer to the edge of his balcony. 'You gonna keep staring, counselor, or you gonna come say hi?' he called out, his voice low and teasing, carrying just enough edge to make her pulse race.

Mia arched a brow, stepping to her own balcony door and sliding it open with a sharp tug. The humid air hit her skin, but it was nothing compared to the heat building inside her. 'Maybe I’m just enjoying the view, neighbor,' she shot back, her tone cool but laced with fire. 'Or are you fishing for a closer inspection?'

Jake laughed, a deep, rumbling sound that made her toes curl. 'Baby, I don’t fish. I hunt. And I’m damn good at it.' He leaned against the railing, his eyes raking over her with unabashed hunger. 'Question is, you gonna let me catch you?'

Mia’s heart pounded, but she matched his stare, her lips curving into a sly grin. 'I don’t get caught, Jake. I choose. And if I do, you’d better keep up.' She turned on her heel, leaving the door open behind her as she sauntered back into her apartment, her hips swaying just enough to make her point.

She heard his footsteps before she saw him—bold, determined, crossing the narrow hallway between their units. By the time she turned, Jake was in her doorway, his broad frame filling the space, his eyes dark with intent. The air between them crackled, heavy with unspoken need.

'Well, damn,' he drawled, stepping inside without hesitation. 'Looks like I’ve been invited.'

Mia crossed her arms, standing her ground, though her body was already betraying her, a flush creeping up her neck. 'Don’t get cocky. I haven’t decided if you’re worth my time yet.'

Jake closed the distance in two strides, stopping just inches from her. His scent—sweat, musk, pure male—hit her like a drug. 'Oh, I’m worth it,' he murmured, his voice a low growl. 'And I’m betting you’re already wet just thinking about finding out.'

Her breath caught, but she tilted her chin up, refusing to give him the upper hand. 'Big talk. Let’s see if you can back it up.'

His hand shot out, gripping her waist with a possessive strength that made her gasp. He pulled her flush against him, and she could feel every hard inch of him pressing into her. Her fingers dug into his shoulders, not to push away, but to pull closer. Their lips crashed together, hungry, desperate, a collision of raw want. Mia’s mind spun as his tongue claimed hers, her body arching into his, already dripping with anticipation for what was about to explode between them.
