The back alley behind Rusty’s Dive stank of stale beer and desperation, a fitting backdrop for Jamie’s current state of mind. The neon sign above the bar’s rear exit flickered erratically, casting a sickly green glow over the cracked pavement as Jamie stumbled out, the door slamming shut behind him with a metallic clang. His short, shockingly pink hair caught the faint light, a beacon of misplaced rebellion in the grimy darkness. He was a mess—eyes red-rimmed from a night of cheap whiskey shots and even cheaper rejections, his slim frame hunched against the cold brick wall as if it could shield him from the ache in his chest.
“Goddamn idiot,” he muttered to himself, dragging the back of his hand across his damp cheeks. Tears. Pathetic. “Can’t even talk to a guy without sounding like a whiny kid. No wonder no one wants you. Pink hair? Really? What were you thinking? You don’t belong here. You don’t belong anywhere.” His voice cracked on the last word, and he let out a bitter laugh, kicking at a crumpled beer can that skittered across the alley with a hollow clatter.
“Aw, now that’s a sad little song, Cotton Candy,” came a voice, deep and smooth as molten tar, slicing through Jamie’s self-pity like a blade. Jamie froze, his breath catching as a shadow detached itself from the deeper darkness of the alley. A tall, imposing Black man stepped into the dim light, his presence filling the narrow space like a storm rolling in. Darius. Jamie didn’t know his name yet, but the name would come soon enough, along with a whole lot more. The man’s smirk was sharp, predatory, and his dark eyes glinted with a mix of mockery and something else—something that made Jamie’s stomach twist in a way he couldn’t name.
“Cotton Candy?” Jamie echoed, his voice wobbling as he tried to straighten up, wiping at his face again. “What the hell does that even mean?”
Darius chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that seemed to vibrate through the damp air. He took a slow step closer, his heavy boots crunching on unseen grit. “Means you look sweet, soft, and like you’d melt under the slightest heat, boy. That pink hair of yours? Screams ‘look at me, I’m a treat.’ But you’re out here cryin’ like someone already took a bite and spit you out.”
Jamie’s face burned, his hands balling into fists at his sides, though they trembled. “Screw you, man. You don’t know me. I’m not—I’m not soft, okay? I just… I had a bad night. That’s all.” His attempt at defiance crumbled as his voice cracked again, high and shaky, and Darius threw back his head with a full-throated laugh that echoed off the alley walls.
“Oh, damn, you’re precious. Tryin’ to growl with that little kitten mew. Adorable.” Darius closed the distance between them in two easy strides, towering over Jamie with a presence that felt like a physical weight. Up close, Jamie could see the hard lines of his jaw, the faint scar cutting through one eyebrow, and the sheer bulk of him—broad shoulders and arms that looked like they could snap Jamie in half without breaking a sweat. “Look at you, all messed up and lost. Bet you don’t even know what you need, do you? Someone’s gotta take charge of this disaster you call a life.”
Jamie’s blush deepened, spreading down his neck as he tried to look away, but his eyes kept darting back to Darius, caught in the magnetic pull of his confidence. “I—I don’t need anyone to take charge of me. I’m fine. I’m… I’m handling it.” The lie tasted sour on his tongue, and he knew Darius saw right through it.
“Handling it?” Darius’s smirk widened into something dangerous, his voice dropping to a husky drawl. “Boy, you’re barely standin’. I’m gonna show you what real strength feels like. You’re gonna learn to stop whimperin’ and start listenin’. Bet you’ve never had someone put you in your place proper, have you?”
The words sent a shiver down Jamie’s spine, equal parts embarrassment and something hotter, something he didn’t want to admit. His protests were half-hearted, more reflex than conviction. “I don’t even know you. Why would I—why would I let you do anything?” But his gaze betrayed him, flickering over Darius’s muscular frame, lingering on the way his tight black shirt clung to every ridge and curve.
Darius didn’t miss a thing. His hand shot out, quick and sure, gripping Jamie’s chin with calloused fingers and forcing his head up until their eyes locked. Jamie’s breath hitched, his knees weakening under the intensity of that stare. “Here’s how it’s gonna go, Cotton Candy,” Darius said, his tone hard and explicit, leaving no room for misinterpretation. “You’re gonna stop actin’ like you got a choice. I see that look in your eyes—you’re curious, even if you’re scared shitless. I’m gonna take you apart piece by piece until you figure out how to put yourself back together. And you’re gonna thank me for it. Understood?”
Jamie’s heart pounded so hard he thought it might crack a rib. His knees actually buckled, just a little, and he had to grab the wall for support. Fear and excitement tangled in his chest, a messy knot he couldn’t unravel. “I… I don’t…” His voice was barely a whisper, but the way his body leaned ever so slightly toward Darius told the real story.
Darius didn’t wait for a coherent answer. His grip shifted from Jamie’s chin to his arm, firm and unyielding, pulling him deeper into the alley’s shadows. “Come on, boy. No more talkin’. You don’t get to decide right now.” His intentions were crystal clear, written in the heat of his gaze and the possessive way he steered Jamie along, the smaller man stumbling to keep up.
Inside, Jamie’s mind was a battlefield. Part of him screamed to run, to yank free and bolt back to the safety of the bar’s dim lights and familiar misery. But a bigger part—a part he hadn’t known existed until this moment—was captivated, ensnared by Darius’s control, by the promise of being led, even if it was into the unknown. His sneakers scuffed against the pavement, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps as they moved further from the flickering neon.
Darius’s voice dropped even lower, a growl that seemed to rumble from his chest as he leaned in close, his breath hot against Jamie’s ear. “One last thing, Cotton Candy. You don’t say no to me. Not tonight. Not ever, unless I give you permission. Now move.”
Jamie’s shaky nod was all the compliance he could muster, his body obeying even as his mind reeled. The alley’s darkness swallowed them both, the faint sounds of the bar fading into nothingness as the power dynamic between them solidified, heavy and unshakeable, setting the stage for whatever came next.
