Chapter 1: Collision Course
The late afternoon sun blazed over the cracked sidewalks of Elmwood Heights, casting long shadows as Riley stormed down the street, her combat boots slamming against the pavement. Her cropped leather jacket barely contained the fury radiating from her muscular frame, and her short, fiery red hair was a wild mess from the fight she’d just walked away from at school. Another suspension, another lecture from the principal—she was done with everyone’s bullshit. At eighteen, Riley was a force of nature, a tomboy with a chip on her shoulder and fists that spoke louder than words. She needed an outlet, and she needed it now.
That’s when she saw him. Ethan, the quiet, lanky senior from her chem class, was shuffling home with his headphones on, oblivious to the storm heading his way. He was all soft edges—messy brown hair, a faded band tee, and a backpack slung lazily over one shoulder. Easy prey. Riley’s lips curled into a smirk as she quickened her pace, her anger morphing into something hotter, something primal.
'Hey, nerd!' she barked, yanking one of his earbuds out as she caught up. Ethan stumbled, nearly dropping his phone, his wide hazel eyes snapping to her in confusion.
'What the hell, Riley?' he sputtered, rubbing his ear. 'What’s your deal?'
'My deal?' she shot back, stepping closer, her voice dripping with venom and something else—something hungry. 'My deal is I’m pissed, and you’re in my way. So, what’re you gonna do about it, huh? Gonna run home to mommy?'
Ethan blinked, then straightened, a surprising edge creeping into his tone. 'Maybe I’ll just stand here and let you throw your little tantrum. You’re not scaring me, Riley. You’re just... loud.'
Her eyes narrowed, but a spark of amusement flickered in them. 'Oh, I’m loud? You wanna hear loud, pretty boy?' She shoved him lightly against the brick wall of the alley they’d wandered near, her hands pinning his shoulders. The heat of her body was electric, her breath hot against his cheek. 'I could make you scream if I wanted to.'
Ethan’s lips parted, a flush creeping up his neck, but he didn’t back down. 'Big talk for someone who’s all bark and no bite. You gonna hit me or what? Or are you just teasing?' His voice dropped, challenging, and Riley felt a jolt low in her belly. Damn, he had some nerve.
'Teasing?' she growled, her grip tightening, but her smirk widened. 'Oh, I don’t tease, Ethan. I take what I want.' Her gaze dropped to his lips, then back to his eyes, daring him to push her further. The air between them crackled, thick with tension and unspoken want.
'Then take it,' he shot back, his voice low and rough, his own hands suddenly gripping her waist, pulling her closer. 'Or are you all talk?'
Riley’s breath hitched, her anger colliding with a rush of raw, desperate need. She could feel the hard lines of his body pressed against hers, could see the challenge in his eyes, and it lit her up like gasoline on a flame. Without another word, she crashed her mouth into his, the kiss fierce and hungry, all teeth and heat. His hands slid down to her ass, squeezing hard as she ground against him, her own fingers tangling in his hair, pulling just enough to make him gasp into her mouth.
They were a mess of panting breaths and urgent touches, the alley hiding their collision from the world as Riley’s anger burned into something else entirely. She could feel him, hard against her thigh, and a wicked grin spread across her face as she broke the kiss, her voice a husky whisper. 'You’re in deep now, pretty boy. Let’s see if you can keep up.'
And with that, she shoved him harder against the wall, her hands already working at his belt, the promise of something explosive hanging heavy in the air.
