Chapter 1: The Fall and the Fire
The sun was a cruel bastard today, blazing down on Lila’s bare shoulders as she trekked through the jagged wilderness. At eighteen, she was a tiny spitfire of a blonde, her plump ass swaying defiantly with every step in her tight hiking shorts. She’d chosen this remote trail for solitude, not expecting the earth to betray her. One misstep near the ravine’s edge, and she was tumbling down, a scream ripping from her throat as rocks bit into her skin.
Below, a shadow loomed. A giant of a man, bearded and broad as a damn oak, watched her descent with predatory calm. His name was Gideon, a hunter who knew these woods like the back of his scarred hands. He hauled her up with one meaty grip, his dark eyes glinting with something far from heroic. 'You’re a long way from safe, little bird,' he growled, voice rough as gravel. Lila, panting and bruised, shot back, 'I’m no one’s bird, asshole. Thanks for the lift, but I’m out.'
Gideon’s smirk was a slow, dangerous thing. 'Out? You’re bleeding and lost. My cabin’s close. You’ll come with me.' It wasn’t a question. Lila’s jaw tightened, but her ankle throbbed like hell. 'Fine. But don’t think I’m some damsel. Touch me wrong, and I’ll carve your beard off with a rusty spoon.' He chuckled, low and dark. 'I like a fighter. Makes the game sweeter.'
The cabin was a rustic trap, all wood and shadow, smelling of pine and something primal. Gideon’s gaze never left her as he pointed to a cot. 'Rest. I’ll fix you up.' Lila scoffed, 'Fix me up? What’s your angle, mountain man? I’m not buying the knight routine.' He leaned close, breath hot on her ear. 'No knight here, girl. I take what I want. And right now, I want to see how wild you really are.'
Her heart slammed against her ribs, not from fear but a reckless heat. She shoved him back, eyes blazing. 'You think I’m easy prey? Step closer, and I’ll show you how I bite.' Gideon’s grin widened, his huge frame crowding her against the cabin wall. 'Bite all you want. I’ve got teeth too.' The air crackled, thick with unspoken challenge. Lila’s skin flushed, her body betraying her with a rush of warmth. She wasn’t trapped—she was a live wire, ready to spark.
His hand grazed her hip, testing, and she didn’t flinch. Instead, she tilted her chin, voice dripping with defiance. 'You’ve got five seconds to back off before I make you regret this.' But her words lacked venom, and he knew it. Gideon’s fingers tightened, pulling her closer, his beard scraping her jaw as he murmured, 'Five seconds? I’ll have you begging in three.'
The tension snapped like a taut rope. Their mouths crashed, hungry and fierce, her hands fisting in his shirt as his roamed her curves with brutal intent. The world narrowed to the heat of their bodies, the promise of something raw and untamed. Whatever game this was, Lila wasn’t losing—not yet.
