Chapter 1: First Day, New Rules
I never thought death would be a ticket to a second chance, but here I am, Maxim, starting over in a world I barely recognize. One minute, I’m fading into the void after a freak accident; the next, I’m face-to-face with some cosmic deity who smirks and says, 'How about a do-over, kid? But with a twist.' And boy, what a twist. I wake up, same old me, same old first day of school—except half the population is furries. Anthro wolves, foxes, cats, you name it, strutting around like it’s the most normal thing in the world. Some are full-on animal hybrids; others, like me, are just plain human. I don’t know the rules of this game yet, but I’m about to learn.
The schoolyard of Furry High is a chaotic blend of growls, purrs, and teenage hormones. I’m trying to keep my head down, clutching my backpack like a lifeline, when a shadow looms over me. She’s a wolf-girl, tall and lean, with piercing amber eyes and fur that glints silver in the sunlight. Her tail flicks with impatience as she sizes me up.
'New meat, huh?' Her voice is low, a playful growl edging her words. 'You smell... human. No fur, no claws. You gonna survive here, pup?'
I straighten up, meeting her gaze. I’m not about to be intimidated, even if her canines flash when she smirks. 'Name’s Maxim. And I’ve survived worse than a playground full of furballs. You got a name, or do I just call you Fido?'
Her laugh is sharp, almost a bark. 'Oh, you’ve got bite for a hairless one. I’m Lyra. Stick with me, and you might not get chewed up on day one. But I don’t babysit for free. What’s in it for me?'
I raise an eyebrow, stepping closer. The air between us crackles, her scent—a mix of wild musk and something dangerously sweet—hitting me hard. 'I’m a quick learner. Maybe I’ve got tricks you haven’t seen yet. Care to find out?'
Lyra’s tail swishes, her eyes narrowing with intrigue. 'Bold, aren’t you? Most humans tremble when they see fangs. You’re either stupid or... interesting. Let’s see how long that confidence lasts.' She leans in, her breath hot against my ear as she whispers, 'Meet me behind the gym after class. We’ll test that bravado of yours.'
The rest of the day drags on, a blur of teachers with twitching ears and classmates who sniff the air when I walk by. But my mind’s on Lyra—those eyes, that challenge. By the time the final bell rings, I’m buzzing with anticipation, my pulse racing as I head to the gym. The secluded spot is shadowed, the air thick with tension as I spot her leaning against the wall, arms crossed, tail flicking.
'Didn’t think you’d show,' she says, pushing off the wall to stalk closer. 'Most humans run the other way.'
'I’m not most humans,' I shoot back, closing the distance. 'So, what’s the test? Or are you just gonna stare me down all day?'
Her grin is feral, hungry. 'Oh, I’ve got plans for you, Maxim. Question is, can you keep up with a wolf?' She steps in, her claws grazing my chest through my shirt, sending a jolt straight through me. My breath hitches, and I can feel myself getting hard already, the heat of her body so close it’s maddening.
'Try me,' I say, voice rough, my hands itching to grab her. Her fur brushes my skin as she tilts her head, lips hovering over mine, and I know we’re seconds away from something wild. Her eyes flash with raw desire, and I’m ready to dive into whatever this world throws at me—starting with her.
