The sun had barely risen, casting a soft glow over the Beacon Academy training grounds. Ruby Rose was already there, her sword gleaming in the early morning light. She twirled it with practiced ease, but even she had to admit that her heart wasn’t in it today.
Just as she was about to call it quits, she heard a familiar voice. “Bored already, Rose?”
Ruby turned to see Blake Belladonna, cool and collected as always. She wore her usual black and white outfit, her hair pulled back into a neat ponytail. There was a playful smirk on her face as she watched Ruby.
Ruby felt a surge of annoyance. “I’m not bored,” she insisted, but even she could hear the lack of conviction in her voice.
Blake raised an eyebrow. “Oh really? Because it looks like amateur hour over here.”
Ruby bristled at the insult, but there was a challenge in Blake’s eyes that she couldn’t resist. “Fine,” she said, sheathing her sword. “You’re on.”
Blake grinned, pulling out her own weapon. “That’s the spirit.”
The two of them faced each other, weapons at the ready. Ruby knew she was outmatched – Blake was faster, stronger, and more experienced. But she was determined to prove herself.
The sparring match began, and Ruby struggled to keep up. Blake moved with lightning speed, her weapon a blur as she attacked. Ruby stumbled, trying to find her footing.
Blake saw her struggling and called out, “Focus, Rose! You need to control your movements.”
Ruby took a deep breath and tried to calm her racing heart. She focused on her footwork, trying to anticipate Blake’s movements. Slowly but surely, she started to land a few hits.
Blake smiled, impressed. “Not bad, Rose. You’re learning.”
Ruby felt a surge of pride. She pushed herself harder, determined to keep up with Blake.
Finally, they both stopped, panting from the exertion. Ruby leaned on her sword, feeling a sense of accomplishment.
Blake walked over to her, a playful glint in her eye. “You did well, Rose. But don’t get too cocky – I’ll be even tougher on you next time.”
Ruby laughed, feeling a little flustered. “I’m looking forward to it,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady.
As they walked back to the dormitory, Ruby couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed that the day had ended. But she shook it off, already looking forward to tomorrow’s training session.
As they reached the dormitory, Ruby turned to Blake. “You know, for an ice queen, you’re not so bad.”
Blake rolled her eyes, but there was a hint of a smile on her face. “And for a rookie, you’re not as clumsy as I thought.”
Ruby grinned, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. She watched as Blake entered her room, feeling a little giddy.
It was going to be a good day.
