Rewinding Desire: A Tale of Youthful Temptation

### Chapter One: Fountain of Oops

The bell above the door of "Curios & Conundrums" jingled with a rusty chime as Mia pushed her way into the cluttered antique shop. Downtown’s quietest corner seemed to have coughed up this relic of a place, stuffed to the brim with odd trinkets, dusty mirrors, and the lingering scent of lavender tangled with old wood. Mia, a 35-year-old businesswoman with a tongue as sharp as her tailored blazer, wasn’t here by design. No, she’d stormed out of a client meeting that had imploded spectacularly—her pitch rejected, her ego bruised, and her coffee spilled for good measure. This shop was just a detour, a whim to kill time before she had to face the wreckage of her day.

Her stilettos clicked against the uneven floorboards as she scanned the chaos, muttering to herself, “What even is this place? A hoarder’s fever dream?” She adjusted her sleek black pencil skirt, brushing off imaginary dust, and caught sight of a figure emerging from behind a curtain of beaded glass.

“Well, well, what do we have here?” came a low, velvety voice, dripping with amusement. The woman who stepped forward was striking, late 50s, with silver-streaked hair pulled into a loose bun and a sly grin that seemed to know too much. She wore a flowing emerald shawl over a black dress, looking like she’d just stepped out of a gothic novel. “A corporate zombie with stilettos sharper than her wit, wandering into my little lair. Lost, darling?”

Mia arched a perfectly sculpted brow, crossing her arms. “Cute. And you must be the resident witch of this… charming dump. What is this, a garage sale for sorcerers?”

The woman—Vesper, according to the tarnished nameplate on the counter—let out a throaty laugh, her dark eyes glinting with mischief. “Oh, I like you. You’ve got bite. But let’s not pretend you’re here for the ambiance. You’ve got stress lines deeper than the Grand Canyon. Bad day, princess?”

Mia smirked, unfazed. “Bad day doesn’t cover it. Try catastrophic. But I’m not here for therapy from a woman who looks like she brews potions in her spare time. Just passing through.”

Vesper tilted her head, her grin widening. “Passing through, hmm? Or running from something? Come, let me show you a little treasure. Might just fix that sour mood of yours.” She beckoned with a long, ring-adorned finger, gliding toward the back of the shop with an air of unshakable command.

Mia rolled her eyes but followed, her curiosity piqued despite herself. “Fine. But if this is some overpriced crystal ball nonsense, I’m out.”

They stopped before a peculiar statue tucked in a shadowy corner—a small, ornate fountain carved from weathered stone, its basin filled with shimmering, impossibly clear water. Tiny cherubs perched on its edges, their expressions oddly mischievous, as if they knew something Mia didn’t.

“This,” Vesper said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, “is no ordinary trinket. It has… special properties.”

Mia snorted, folding her arms again. “Oh, please. What, does it grant wishes? Or maybe it’s cursed? I’ve seen enough horror movies to know how this goes.”

Vesper’s lips curled into a knowing smile. “Not quite, darling. Let’s just say it can rewind time… in unexpected ways. A little dip, and who knows? You might find yourself unburdened.”

“Unburdened?” Mia laughed, sharp and skeptical. “You’re telling me this glorified birdbath is a time machine? What’s next, a broomstick rental service?”

Vesper’s gaze didn’t waver, her tone cool and challenging. “Mock all you want, princess, but I dare you to touch the water. See if you’re brave enough to handle a little mystery. Or are you all bark and no bite?”

Mia’s competitive streak flared. She never backed down from a dare, especially not from a woman who looked like she could outwit a fox. “Fine. But when nothing happens, I expect a refund for my wasted time.” She stepped forward, her movements deliberate, and dipped her fingers into the cool, shimmering water. A strange tingle shot through her hand, racing up her arm like a current of static electricity. She yanked her hand back, frowning.

“What the hell was that?” she muttered, shaking off the sensation.

Vesper chuckled, leaning against a nearby shelf with an air of smug satisfaction. “Probably just allergic to fairy tales, dear. Or maybe… something else.”

Mia shot her a glare, but before she could retort, she caught her reflection in a cracked mirror hanging nearby. Her breath hitched. Her face looked… softer somehow. The faint lines around her eyes seemed less pronounced, her gaze brighter, almost as if a few years had melted away. She blinked hard, tilting her head. “What the…?”

Vesper’s laughter danced through the air. “Time plays tricks on tightwads, doesn’t it? Don’t worry, it’s probably just the lighting. Or is it?”

Mia’s hands, usually steady as steel, felt oddly jittery as she touched her cheek, half-expecting to feel something different. “This is ridiculous. It’s just a trick. Mirrors in places like this are always warped.”

“If you say so,” Vesper purred, reaching into a drawer and pulling out a small glass vial filled with the fountain’s water. She held it out to Mia with a wink. “A little souvenir. Use it sparingly, darling, unless you fancy diapers.”

Mia snatched the vial, her lips twitching into a smirk despite her unease. “You’re a con artist with a side of crazy, you know that? But fine, I’ll bite. Let’s see if this magic juice does anything other than make my skin glow.” She slipped the vial into her purse, her tone dripping with sarcasm. “Thanks for the sideshow, Witchy McWitchface.”

Vesper’s eyes gleamed as she watched Mia turn toward the door. “Oh, you’ll be back, princess. They always are.”

Mia tossed a final quip over her shoulder as she stepped outside. “Only if I run out of sane places to hide.” The bell jingled again as the door swung shut behind her, and she strode down the sidewalk, an inexplicable lightness in her step. She didn’t notice it yet—not fully—but the first subtle signs of something impossible were already stirring beneath her skin, whispering of a rewind she couldn’t yet comprehend.
