Rough Diamonds: When Six Hedgehog Misfits and a Nervous Hero Take on the Ultimate Game of Survival and Desire

Chapter One: Desperate Measures

The Emergency Room of the Mobius Animal Hospital was a flurry of activity, the sterile air filled with the sounds of whirring machines and hushed voices. The doors burst open, revealing a figure that was a blur of blue. Sonic skidded to a halt, his eyes wide with panic as he clutched six critically injured hedgehogs to his chest.

Dr. Amy Rose looked up from her paperwork, her stern gaze softening as she took in the sight of her long-time friend. "Sonic, you're pushing yourself too hard," she chided, her hands already reaching out to take the injured animals from his grasp. "Let my team help."

Sonic hesitated, his grip tightening for a moment before he reluctantly released them. His eyes never left the small, still forms as the hospital staff whisked them away, their expressions grave.

Dr. Amy moved with practiced efficiency, issuing orders to her team as she examined each patient. She spared a glance for Sonic, her eyes narrowing as she noted the lines of exhaustion etched into his face. "You know, you could've just called for an ambulance," she said, her voice laced with playful insult. "But no, you had to play the hero."

Sonic ran a hand through his spiky blue hair, his lips twitching into a weak smile. "There was no time, Amy!" he retorted, his voice tight with tension. "And besides, when have you ever known me to back down from a challenge?"

Dr. Amy rolled her eyes, the corner of her mouth quirking up into a smirk. "Fine, Mr. Show-Off," she replied, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Let's see if your 'heroics' paid off."

As the medical team rushed to save the injured hedgehogs, Sonic's gaze drifted to a nearby incubator. His heart ached as he watched two tiny figures struggle to survive, their tiny bodies fighting against the odds. He turned to Dr. Amy, his voice barely above a whisper. "What can I do to help them?"

Dr. Amy looked up, her expression softening at the sight of Sonic's concern. She moved to the incubator, her fingers brushing gently against the glass. "The newborns need to be fed every hour," she explained, her voice gentle. "But their mother didn't survive childbirth."

Sonic's eyes widened, his heart clenching at the tragic news. Determination flashed in his gaze, and he asked, "Can I... can I breastfeed them?"

Dr. Amy burst out laughing, her hand covering her mouth as she tried to suppress her amusement. "Oh, Sonic!" she gasped, her eyes sparkling with mirth. "You're always full of surprises! But I'm afraid that's not how it works."

She directed Sonic to a nearby breast pump and supplies, her eyes twinkling with amusement as she watched him struggle to figure out how to use the machine. Her voice was laced with patience as she instructed him, her laughter barely contained.

Sonic eventually figured it out, his expression relieved as he began to feed the newborns. They responded eagerly, their tiny bodies beginning to stabilize under his care. Dr. Amy watched him with newfound respect, her eyes softening as she took in the sight of the blue hedgehog caring for the vulnerable newborns. "You might just have a knack for this, Sonic," she murmured, her voice filled with admiration.
