Rules of the Heart

Rules of the Heart

Chapter 1: The Clash of Order and Chaos

Riddle Rosehearts stood at the center of the Heartslabyul dormitory courtyard, his petite frame casting a surprisingly imposing shadow under the crimson glow of the setting sun. His neutral-ginger hair framed his stern face, the heart-shaped strands on his forehead almost mocking the rigid rules he upheld with an iron grip. His bluish-gray eyes scanned the area, sharp and unyielding, as he clutched the rulebook of the Queen of Hearts like a sacred text. To him, every written decree was law—be it the Queen’s bizarre edicts or the dormitory’s endless list of customs. Chaos, he believed, was the enemy, and he was its sworn vanquisher.

Enter Ellis, the dormitory’s resident troublemaker and gossip extraordinaire. He stumbled into the courtyard, his lanky frame weaving slightly from the cocktail of medications coursing through his system. His curious hazel eyes glinted with mischief as he spotted Riddle, a smirk tugging at his lips. Ellis was a walking contradiction—nosy to a fault, yet prickly when anyone dared pry into his own affairs. And right now, he was itching to poke the bear.

“Well, well, if it isn’t Hriddle,” Ellis drawled, leaning against a rosebush with deliberate nonchalance, mangling Riddle’s name as he often did with those he found intriguing. “Still playing the Queen’s lapdog, I see. What’s the punishment today? Beheading for sneezing out of turn?”

Riddle’s jaw tightened, his grip on the rulebook whitening his knuckles. “Mockery of the Queen’s laws is a violation of Rule 53, Ellis. I suggest you rethink your tone before I assign you hedgehog duty for a week.”

Ellis chuckled, unfazed, stepping closer. The faint scent of medicinal herbs clung to him, a side effect of his endless prescriptions, but there was something electric in his gaze—something that made Riddle’s stern facade flicker for a split second. “Oh, come off it, Hriddle. You’re wound tighter than a clock in a thunderstorm. Ever think about breaking a rule just to see what happens? Bet the world wouldn’t implode.”

Riddle’s cheeks flushed, though whether from anger or something else, he couldn’t tell. “Breaking rules leads to disorder. I will not allow Heartslabyul to descend into anarchy because of your reckless whims!”

Ellis tilted his head, his smirk widening as he closed the distance between them, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “Reckless whims, huh? Sounds like fun. Tell me, Hriddle, do you ever get tired of being so... perfect? Don’t you wanna feel something other than duty for once?”

The air between them crackled, charged with unspoken tension. Riddle’s breath hitched, his usually composed demeanor fraying at the edges. Ellis’s words were a challenge, a dangerous lure, and for the first time, Riddle felt the weight of his own rules like chains. He opened his mouth to retort, but Ellis was already too close, his hand brushing against Riddle’s arm—a fleeting, deliberate touch that sent a jolt through him.

“Stop this nonsense,” Riddle snapped, but his voice lacked its usual bite. His heart raced, a traitor to his iron will, as Ellis’s gaze locked onto his, daring him to step over the line he’d drawn so meticulously.

“Make me,” Ellis teased, his tone low and suggestive, his fingers lingering just a moment too long. The courtyard seemed to shrink around them, the world narrowing to the heat of their proximity. Riddle’s resolve wavered, his mind a battlefield of order and desire, as Ellis leaned in, his breath warm against Riddle’s ear.

“You’re not as untouchable as you think, Hriddle,” Ellis murmured, his voice a velvet blade. “Let’s see how long you can keep playing by the rules when I’m done with you.”

Riddle’s world tilted, the rulebook slipping from his grasp as Ellis’s lips hovered dangerously close to his own. The promise of chaos was intoxicating, and for the first time, Riddle wondered if breaking just one rule might be worth the fall.
