Secrets by the Shore

Chapter 1: The Party's Edge

Cal and Ann had barely unpacked their last box in their new Myrtle Beach bungalow when the invitation slipped under their door. A house party hosted by their neighbors, Jim and Shannon, promised a night of ‘unforgettable fun.’ At 59, Cal was skeptical of anything labeled ‘fun’ by strangers, but Ann, 56 and brimming with a restless energy, insisted they go. ‘We’re not dead yet, Cal,’ she teased, her sharp green eyes glinting with mischief. ‘Let’s see what these beach bums consider a good time.’

The party was already a pulsing beast by the time they arrived. Jim, a tanned, silver-haired fox in his early 60s, greeted them with a grin that was all teeth and charm. ‘Welcome to the wild side of retirement,’ he quipped, handing Cal a beer with a wink. Shannon, a statuesque woman with a cascade of auburn hair and a laugh like a siren’s call, looped her arm through Ann’s. ‘Stick with me, darling,’ she purred, her voice dripping with honeyed intent. ‘I’ll show you how we play down here.’

Ann tossed Cal a smirk over her shoulder as she was whisked away. ‘Don’t wait up, old man,’ she called, her tone biting but playful. Cal rolled his eyes, muttering under his breath, ‘Old man, my ass. I’ve still got more game than half these punks.’ But he let her go, sipping his beer and watching the crowd of sun-weathered locals and curious newcomers mingle under the strobe of cheap party lights.

Hours bled into the night, and Ann’s laughter grew louder, her movements looser with each glass of wine Shannon poured. Cal kept tabs from a distance, noting how Jim’s hand lingered on Ann’s shoulder, how Shannon’s whispers in her ear made Ann’s cheeks flush. ‘They’re a damn tag team,’ he grumbled to himself, a mix of irritation and intrigue stirring in his gut. But when Ann vanished from the living room, Cal’s curiosity sharpened into concern.

‘Where the hell did she wander off to?’ he muttered, setting his beer down and weaving through the sweaty, swaying bodies. The downstairs was a maze of drunken laughter and spilled drinks, but no Ann. Then he heard it—a low murmur of voices, a ripple of excitement from upstairs. His boots thudded on the steps as he climbed, the air growing thicker, charged with something he couldn’t yet name.

At the end of the hall, a door stood ajar, light spilling out along with hushed gasps and murmurs. Cal’s heart kicked up a notch as he edged closer, peering through the crack. A crowd had gathered, their eyes hungry, fixed on the center of the room. And there she was—Ann, his Ann, surrounded by a knot of men, her blouse half-unbuttoned, her laughter wild and unrestrained. She wasn’t a victim; she was the goddamn queen of this chaos, her gaze fierce as she met their stares head-on.

‘Well, damn,’ Cal whispered to himself, a smirk tugging at his lips despite the shock. His blood ran hot, a confusing mix of betrayal and fascination. He could’ve stormed in, dragged her out, made a scene. But he didn’t. Instead, he backed away, silent as a shadow, retreating downstairs with the image of her seared into his mind. Whatever game Ann was playing, he’d let her play it—for now.

Back in the living room, Jim caught his eye across the room, raising a glass with a knowing smirk. ‘Lost something, Cal?’ he called, his tone slick with amusement.

Cal forced a grin, gripping his beer tighter. ‘Nah, just stretching my legs. Ann’s probably off ruling the world somewhere.’

Jim chuckled, low and dangerous. ‘Oh, she’s ruling something, alright.’

Cal’s jaw tightened, but he kept his cool, the weight of what he’d seen burning in his chest. Whatever happened next, he’d keep his mouth shut. For now, the party—and its secrets—raged on.
