Chapter 1: Embers of Temptation
The forest was a labyrinth of whispers and shadows, a sprawling expanse where danger lurked in every rustle of leaves. Five survivors—two men and three women—had banded together to endure the 99 nights, their campfire a flickering beacon against the horrors of The Deer and the silent cultists. Among them, tension simmered hotter than the flames, and tonight, under a moonless sky, it threatened to ignite.
Rory, a rugged man with a devil-may-care smirk, tossed another log onto the fire, his eyes glinting as they flicked toward Lila, the group’s sharpshooter. She was a force of nature, her dark hair pulled back tight, her gaze as piercing as the rifle she cradled. 'You keep staring, Rory, and I might just shoot that smirk off your face,' she snapped, her voice cutting through the crackle of the fire. 'Or are you just hoping to warm more than your hands tonight?'
Rory chuckled, leaning closer, his breath a warm tease against the chilly air. 'Darlin’, I’m just wondering if you’re as deadly with those lips as you are with that gun. Care to test me?'
Lila’s eyes narrowed, but a smirk tugged at her lips. 'Keep dreaming, cowboy. I don’t play with boys who can’t keep up.'
Nearby, Mara, the group’s resourceful medic, rolled her eyes as she sharpened a blade. 'If you two are done flirting, maybe focus on the fact that The Deer’s been circling closer every night. I’m not patching up anyone who gets distracted by a hard-on.' Her tone was sharp, her curvy frame tense as she worked, but there was a flicker of amusement in her hazel eyes.
Jade, the quiet but fierce scavenger, scoffed from her perch on a log, her lean muscles taut as she cleaned a pistol. 'Let them banter, Mara. Maybe it’ll keep their hands busy and off the rest of us.' Her voice dripped with sarcasm, but her gaze lingered on Rory a moment too long, betraying a spark of curiosity.
The second man, Caleb, a brooding loner with a penchant for trouble, stayed silent, his eyes dark and unreadable as he watched the exchange. The tension among them was a live wire, ready to spark at the slightest touch.
As the night deepened, Lila stood, stretching with a deliberate arch of her back, her shirt riding up just enough to reveal a sliver of toned skin. 'I’m checking the perimeter. Anyone brave enough to join me, or are you all just gonna sit there gawking?' Her challenge hung in the air, a dare wrapped in seduction.
Rory was on his feet in an instant, his grin wicked. 'Lead the way, sharpshooter. I’ve got no problem keeping pace.'
They ventured just beyond the fire’s glow, the forest swallowing their footsteps. Lila stopped near a gnarled oak, turning to face him, her breath visible in the cold. 'You think you’ve got me figured out, don’t you?' she purred, stepping closer, her body heat a stark contrast to the night air. 'Think you can just charm your way into my pants?'
Rory’s hand brushed her hip, his voice low and rough. 'I don’t charm, Lila. I take what I want. And right now, I want to see if you’re as wild as you talk.'
Her laugh was sharp, but she didn’t pull away. Instead, she grabbed his collar, yanking him closer. 'Then shut up and prove it, before I change my mind.' Their lips crashed together, hungry and fierce, hands roaming with urgent need. Lila’s fingers dug into his shoulders as she pressed against him, feeling him grow hard against her thigh. The forest around them seemed to hold its breath, the danger of The Deer forgotten in the heat of their desire.
Back at the campfire, Mara glanced toward the shadows where they’d disappeared, her lips twitching. 'If they’re not back in ten, I’m betting The Deer gets them before they get off.'
Jade snorted, her eyes glinting with dark humor. 'Or they’ll come back sweating and panting, looking guilty as hell.'
The night was young, and the forest was alive with threats—and temptations. As Lila and Rory’s encounter built toward a fever pitch, the promise of raw, unbridled passion hung heavy in the air, a prelude to the chaos and lust that would soon consume them all.
