Chapter 1: Unveiled Secrets
The door creaked open, a sliver of moonlight slicing through the dim living room as Elena staggered in. Her tailored trousers clung to her legs, stained with streaks of crimson, and her blouse was torn at the shoulder, revealing a bruised collarbone. She clutched her abdomen, her face contorted in pain, a slight limp betraying every step. The corporate party had clearly gone south—way south.
Her son, Damien, lounged on the couch, a half-empty beer in hand, his sharp eyes catching her disheveled state instantly. At 24, he was all lean muscle and piercing intensity, his jaw tightening as he stood, concern flickering beneath a smirk. 'What the hell happened to you, Ma? You look like you went ten rounds with a grizzly.'
Elena waved him off, her voice hoarse but laced with defiance. 'Don’t start, Damien. I’m fine. Just... need a damn drink.' She hobbled toward the kitchen, but he was quicker, blocking her path with a casual yet commanding stance.
'Fine, my ass. You’re bleeding. Spill it, or I’m dragging you to the ER.' His tone was sharp, but his eyes softened, betraying a raw edge of worry.
She sighed, leaning against the wall, her breath ragged. 'Alright, fine. Some bitch at the party decided I was her punching bag. Happy now?' Her words dripped with venom, her gaze daring him to push further.
Damien’s brow arched, a mix of shock and dark amusement playing on his lips. 'Happy? No. Curious as fuck? Hell yes. Who did this? And why?' He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming, the faint scent of his cologne mixing with the metallic tang of her blood.
Elena’s lips curled into a bitter smile, her eyes glinting with a fire that hadn’t been snuffed out by the beating. 'Some executive’s wife. Thought I was flirting with her man. She cornered me in the parking lot, started swinging. Hit me in the chest, slammed her fist right between my legs—damn near crippled me. Kept going for my stomach, my face. Said she’d make sure I couldn’t even look at another man without remembering her.' Her voice was steady, almost proud, as if recounting a war story. 'I fought back, Damien. Didn’t just take it. But she was a fucking beast.'
Damien’s jaw clenched, his hands balling into fists at his sides. 'And you didn’t call me? I would’ve been there in a heartbeat to knock her teeth out.' His voice dropped, a dangerous edge creeping in. 'No one touches you. No one.'
Elena laughed, a low, throaty sound that sent a shiver down his spine despite the situation. 'Oh, please. I don’t need a knight in shining armor. I need a stiff drink and a hot shower. Maybe a stiff something else to take the edge off.' Her eyes locked on his, a challenge sparking there, her pain morphing into something hotter, more primal.
Damien swallowed hard, the air between them crackling with unspoken tension. 'Careful, Ma. You’re playing with fire, and I’m not exactly known for backing down.' His smirk returned, darker now, as he stepped even closer, his breath warm against her ear. 'You want to forget the pain? I can make that happen.'
Her hand shot out, gripping his shirt, pulling him in until their lips were inches apart. 'Don’t tease me, boy. I’m not in the mood for games. If you’re offering, you better deliver.' Her voice was a growl, her body still aching but now buzzing with a different kind of need, her strength radiating even through her wounds.
His hands slid to her hips, careful of her injuries but firm, his gaze burning into hers. 'Oh, I’ll deliver. Let’s see how much pain we can replace with something... harder.' The promise in his words hung heavy, their bodies pressing closer, the heat building to an inferno as they teetered on the edge of something explosive.
