Silent Command

Silent Command

Chapter 1: The Unspoken Pull

The bar was a haze of dim amber light and murmured conversations when Jeanne first noticed him. He sat at the far end, a glass of whiskey untouched, his broad shoulders hunched just enough to suggest he wasn’t here to be seen. But she saw him. Hell, she couldn’t *not* see him. It was the way the air seemed to bend around him, like he carried his own gravity. She adjusted the cuff of her white blazer, her burgundy nails catching the light, and smirked to herself. This wasn’t going to be a boring night after all.

She slid onto the stool two seats down, crossing her legs with deliberate ease, the black-and-white floral dress riding just high enough to draw a glance—if he dared. He didn’t. Not yet. But his head tilted, just a fraction, acknowledging her presence. Good. She liked a man who paid attention.

‘Rough day, or are you just allergic to smiling?’ Her voice cut through the low hum of the bar, sharp and teasing, her bright smile flashing like a challenge. She leaned forward, resting an elbow on the counter, her deep burgundy lipstick a stark contrast to the playful glint in her eyes.

He turned his head slowly, his gaze locking with hers. It was piercing, unhurried, like he was sizing up a battlefield. A faint smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. ‘Smiling’s overrated. You look like you do enough of it for both of us.’ His voice was low, gravelly, each word measured like he was rationing them out. It sent a shiver down her spine, though she’d never admit it.

Jeanne laughed, the sound rich and unapologetic. ‘Oh, I do. But I’m generous. I can lend you one if you ask nicely.’ She tilted her head, letting a strand of hair slip from the clip that held it back, her confidence a weapon she wielded with precision.

He leaned back, his rough hands resting on the bar, fingers splayed like they knew exactly how to take control. ‘I don’t ask nicely. But I’m guessing you don’t either.’ His eyes flicked down to her painted nails, then back up, a spark of something dangerous in them. ‘You’re not here for small talk, are you?’

She arched a brow, sipping her gin with a slow, deliberate pull. ‘Small talk is for small minds. I’m here for something... bigger.’ The innuendo hung between them, heavy and electric. She watched his jaw tighten, just for a split second, and knew she’d hit her mark.

He let out a low chuckle, rare and warm, but laced with an edge that made her pulse quicken. ‘Careful, darling. You might get more than you’re bargaining for.’ He stood, closing the distance between them in one fluid step, his presence towering without effort. The scent of him—leather, whiskey, and something raw—hit her like a wave.

Jeanne didn’t flinch. She tilted her chin up, meeting his gaze head-on, her smile sharp as a blade. ‘I don’t bargain. I take what I want.’ Her voice dropped, a velvet challenge, as her hand brushed against his arm, testing the waters. The heat of his skin under the Henley was enough to make her breath catch, but she masked it with a smirk.

His eyes darkened, and he leaned in, his breath hot against her ear. ‘Then take it. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.’ His words were a promise, rough and hungry, and she felt the first stir of something primal uncoil in her core. Her fingers tightened on his arm, nails digging just enough to let him know she wasn’t playing games.

The bar faded into a blur as they moved toward the shadowed hallway near the back, her heart pounding with anticipation. She could feel the hardness of him through the tension in his frame, the way his hand grazed her lower back, guiding without pushing. She wasn’t about to be led, though—she turned, pressing him against the wall with a boldness that made his breath hitch. ‘Let’s see if you can keep up,’ she purred, her lips hovering just shy of his, her body already aching for the collision she knew was coming.

His hands found her hips, firm and deliberate, pulling her closer until she could feel every inch of his intent. ‘I don’t just keep up,’ he growled, his voice a low rumble. ‘I finish what I start.’ And with that, the space between them vanished, their mouths crashing together in a kiss that was all heat and hunger, promising an explosion neither of them would walk away from unscathed.
