The family living room was a chaotic little haven, a mismatched puzzle of thrift store finds and hand-me-downs. A big, fluffy couch dominated the center, its faded floral pattern barely visible under a pile of throw pillows. An old TV blared in the background, spitting out canned laughter from a sitcom rerun nobody was watching. The air smelled faintly of popcorn and the lingering citrus of their mother’s perfume, a ghost of her presence before she and their dad jetted off for a months-long business trip.
Mia, eighteen and brimming with restless energy, sprawled across one end of the couch, her bare feet dangling over the armrest. Her dark hair was a messy bun atop her head, and her oversized hoodie swallowed her petite frame. She clutched the remote like it was a lifeline, her hazel eyes narrowing as she flipped through channels with ruthless precision.
On the other end of the couch sat Lila, her twenty-two-year-old futanari sister, all long limbs and effortless confidence. Lila’s auburn hair cascaded over her shoulder in a loose braid, and her tank top hugged her toned arms as she leaned back, one leg crossed over the other. Her sharp green eyes glinted with mischief, locked on Mia with the predatory focus of a cat eyeing a particularly annoying mouse.
“Seriously, Mia, are we gonna watch paint dry on channel 472, or can I pick something that doesn’t make me want to gouge my eyes out?” Lila drawled, her voice dripping with mock exasperation.
Mia didn’t even glance her way, her thumb still stabbing at the remote. “Oh, I’m sorry, Your Majesty. I didn’t realize I was in the presence of the supreme ruler of TV Land. How about you go rule over the kitchen instead and make me a sandwich?”
Lila let out a sharp bark of laughter, leaning forward now, her elbows on her knees. “Cute. Real cute. But let’s get one thing straight, little gremlin. Mom and Dad are gone, which means I’m the boss of this dump. And the boss wants the remote.”
Mia finally turned her head, her lips curling into a smirk. “Boss? You’re more like a bossy ogre. Why don’t you use those freakishly long arms of yours to grab it yourself, huh?”
“Oh, I will,” Lila shot back, her grin widening as she lunged across the couch in one fluid motion. Before Mia could react, Lila’s hands were on hers, wrestling for the remote. Mia squealed, trying to yank it away, but Lila’s strength was undeniable. In seconds, she had Mia pinned beneath her, one knee pressing into the couch cushion beside Mia’s hip, her hands gripping Mia’s wrists above her head. The remote clattered to the floor, forgotten.
“Gotcha,” Lila purred, her face hovering inches above Mia’s, her breath warm and teasing. Her green eyes sparkled with something dangerous, something that made Mia’s stomach flip in a way she wasn’t sure she liked. “What’s the matter, gremlin? Not so tough now, are ya?”
Mia squirmed, her cheeks flushing as she tried to shove Lila off. “Get off me, you overgrown troll! What is this, WWE tryouts? I’m not your personal wrestling dummy!”
Lila chuckled, her grip tightening just enough to keep Mia in place. “Oh, come on, don’t be such a drama queen. I’m just laying down the law. Rule number one: what I say goes. Rule number two: you don’t argue with rule number one. Got it?”
Mia rolled her eyes, but there was a spark of defiance in them. “Wow, such a visionary leader. Should I start calling you Dictator Lila now? Or do you prefer Supreme Overlord?”
“Keep running that mouth, and I’ll make you salute me every morning,” Lila fired back, her tone dipping into something lower, more commanding. She shifted her weight, letting just a little more of her body press against Mia’s, enough to make the younger girl freeze for a split second. “I’m serious, though. I’m in charge, and you’re gonna play nice. Starting with getting your lazy butt up and grabbing us some snacks.”
Mia blinked up at her, caught off guard by the sudden shift in Lila’s demeanor. “Snacks? What am I, your personal servant now? Get your own damn chips!”
Lila tilted her head, her smirk growing into something sly, almost predatory. “Oh, I could. But where’s the fun in that? Besides, I think you’ll like being my little helper. Don’t you wanna keep the boss happy?”
There it was again—that undercurrent of something heavier, something that made Mia’s pulse quicken despite herself. She huffed, trying to mask the weird flutter in her chest with another jab. “Happy? The only thing that’d make you happy is if I built you a throne out of Doritos. Fine, whatever. I’ll get your stupid snacks. But only because I’m starving, not because I’m your minion.”
Lila finally released her, sitting back with a triumphant grin as Mia scrambled to her feet, brushing herself off with exaggerated annoyance. “That’s a good girl,” Lila teased, her voice laced with amusement but underscored by something else—something that lingered in the air like static before a storm. “Hurry up, gremlin. I don’t have all day.”
Mia shot her a glare over her shoulder as she stomped toward the kitchen, muttering under her breath. “Good girl, my ass. Bossy freaking ogre. Thinks she’s the queen of the castle now…”
But as she rummaged through the pantry, grabbing a bag of chips and a couple of sodas, Mia couldn’t shake the odd heat in her cheeks or the way Lila’s words echoed in her mind. There was something about her sister’s newfound assertiveness, the way she’d pinned her down and taken control so effortlessly, that stirred a flicker of curiosity deep inside her. Just how far did Lila plan to take this whole “I’m in charge” thing? And why did a tiny, traitorous part of Mia kind of want to find out?
She shook her head, trying to banish the thought as she headed back to the living room, where Lila lounged like a queen on her floral throne, waiting with that same infuriating, knowing smirk. Whatever game her sister was playing, Mia wasn’t sure she was ready for the rules. But as she dropped the snacks onto the coffee table and met Lila’s piercing gaze, she couldn’t deny the spark of intrigue that flared in her chest. This was going to be a long, strange month.
