The living room of my house was a scene of organized chaos as I prepared for my daughter's sleepover with her best friend. I popped a batch of popcorn, set up pillows and blankets on the floor, and arranged a selection of board games on the coffee table. I was looking forward to a quiet evening, knowing that the girls would probably stay up all night talking and not get any sleep.
My daughter and her friend arrived, giggling and carrying sleeping bags. "Thanks for setting everything up, Mom," my daughter said, giving me a hug.
"Yeah, thanks!" her friend chimed in.
I made a playful insult about how the girls would probably be too busy talking to actually sleep. They rolled their eyes and laughed.
"Can we have a movie night?" my daughter asked.
I agreed, but teased her about only wanting to watch "girly" movies. She stuck her tongue out at me and the two of them settled in to watch a romantic comedy.
As the movie went on, I couldn't help but make more playful insults about how I was the only one in the room who knew what real love was. The girls rolled their eyes and laughed, but I could see them getting cozy under their blankets.
I got up to get more popcorn and noticed that the girls were getting restless. I suggested we play a game instead.
The girls agreed and chose a board game. They started to play, but I could tell that they weren't really paying attention. I made a playful insult about how they were more interested in each other than the game. The girls blushed and laughed.
I decided to go to bed, leaving the girls to continue their sleepover. As I was getting ready, I heard them giggling and whispering. I smiled and thought about how lucky I was to have such a great daughter and her daughter's great friend.
As I was about to fall asleep, I heard the girls come into my room. They asked if they could sleep in my bed instead of the living room. I agreed, but teased them about being scared of the dark. They rolled their eyes and climbed into bed with me.
I fell asleep with my daughter and her friend cuddled up next to me. I woke up in the middle of the night to find the girls gone. I got up and found them sleeping on the living room floor, still wrapped up in their blankets. I smiled and covered them with a blanket before going back to bed.
It was a night of laughter, love, and friendship. I wouldn't have traded it for anything.
