Sarah lay sprawled on the couch, a picture of despair, her heart still aching from the recent breakup. The living room of their shared apartment was dimly lit, save for the flickering light of the TV that no one was watching. John, her roommate and longtime friend, walked in, his eyes immediately drawn to Sarah's crumpled form.
"Hey, you okay?" he asked, concern lacing his voice as he made his way towards her. Sarah waved him off, insisting she was fine, but John wasn't convinced. He sat down next to her, wrapping her in a comforting hug.
"You know you can talk to me, right?" he murmured, his chin resting on the top of her head. Sarah sighed, feeling the tension in her shoulders slowly begin to ease. She reminisced about the countless times they had been there for each other, through relationships, life events, and everything in between.
"I know," she finally replied, her voice muffled against his shoulder. "I just... I didn't think it would hurt this much."
John listened intently, offering words of encouragement and support. As they sat together, Sarah began to see him in a new light. She had never considered the possibility of them being together, but as he spoke, she realized how much they had in common.
"I've always been attracted to you, you know," John admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. Sarah pulled away, looking at him with a mixture of surprise and curiosity.
"What?" she asked, trying to keep her tone light. "Now that I'm single, you're making your move?"
John laughed, a hint of embarrassment coloring his cheeks. "Maybe. But I've always seen you as more than just a friend, Sarah. I hope you know that."
Sarah was taken aback, unsure of how to process this new information. She decided to change the subject, asking John about his love life. They spent the next hour discussing past relationships, their laughter and banter filling the room. As they talked, Sarah found herself becoming more and more drawn to John.
She noticed the way he looked at her, the subtle shifts in his body language, and the tension between them grew. Sarah decided to take a risk, leaning in to kiss him. John was taken aback at first, but quickly reciprocated, his arms wrapping around her as they deepened the kiss.
Sarah pulled away, a playful smirk on her lips. "Well, well, well. Look at you, finally making your move."
John laughed, his hands still tangled in her hair. "Guess I'm a late bloomer when it comes to us."
Sarah grinned, pulling him back in for another kiss. As they continued to explore their newfound connection, Sarah couldn't help but think about how long they had waited for this moment.
"I can't believe we waited this long," she whispered, her breath hot against his neck.
John smiled, his arms tightening around her. "Sometimes the best things are worth waiting for."
As the night wore on, Sarah and John found themselves becoming more and more entwined, their laughter and flirtatious banter giving way to something deeper. The spark between them had finally ignited, and they fell asleep together on the couch, the start of a new chapter in their longtime friendship.
