Chapter 1: Heat in the Sauna
Madeline adjusted the towel around her toned frame as she stepped into the hotel sauna, the heat enveloping her like a lover’s embrace. The work conference in Miami had been a whirlwind of presentations and networking, but this was her moment to unwind. Her husband, Tom, was back home in Chicago, probably buried in his latest coding project. She missed him, but the distance also ignited a restless spark within her—a craving for something daring.
The sauna was nearly empty, save for a striking woman sitting on the upper bench, her long legs glistening with sweat under the dim amber light. Her dark hair was pulled into a messy bun, and her piercing green eyes flicked up to meet Madeline’s with an intensity that made her breath hitch. The woman’s towel barely covered her curves, and she didn’t seem to care.
“Mind if I join?” Madeline asked, her voice smooth but carrying an edge of challenge as she settled on the bench across from the stranger.
“Only if you can handle the heat,” the woman replied, her lips curling into a smirk. Her tone was low, teasing, almost a dare. “I’m Vanessa, by the way. Here for the conference?”
Madeline chuckled, brushing a strand of damp hair from her face. “Yeah, marketing panelist. I’m Madeline. And trust me, I can handle more than just heat.”
Vanessa’s eyes glinted with mischief as she leaned forward, the towel slipping just enough to reveal the swell of her breasts. “Oh, I bet you can. You’ve got that look—polished on the outside, but a wildfire underneath. Am I wrong?”
Madeline raised an eyebrow, unfazed by the boldness. “You’re not wrong. But I’m not some blushing ingénue either. I’m happily married, just so we’re clear.”
Vanessa laughed, a rich, throaty sound that echoed in the steamy room. “Married doesn’t mean dead, darling. I’m just enjoying the view—and the conversation. Unless you’re scared of a little flirtation?”
“Scared?” Madeline shot back, her voice dripping with confidence. “Honey, I eat flirtation for breakfast. But let’s see if you can keep up.”
The air between them crackled, the heat of the sauna amplifying the tension. Vanessa shifted, her towel riding up her thigh as she crossed her legs, her gaze never leaving Madeline’s. “Oh, I can keep up. Question is, how long before you’re sweating for reasons other than this steam?”
Madeline felt a flush that had nothing to do with the temperature. Her skin prickled as she leaned back, letting her own towel loosen just a fraction, revealing the curve of her hip. “Keep talking like that, and you might find out sooner than you think.”
Vanessa’s smirk widened as she stood, closing the distance between them with a predatory grace. She stopped just inches away, the scent of her skin—salt and something intoxicating—filling Madeline’s senses. “I’m not just talk, Madeline. I’m action. So, what’s it gonna be? A safe little chat, or do you want to play with fire?”
Madeline’s heart raced, her body already responding to the challenge. She stood too, meeting Vanessa eye-to-eye, their breaths mingling in the humid air. “I’ve never been one for safe,” she murmured, her voice a husky promise. “Let’s see how hot this fire can get.”
Their lips were a whisper apart, the anticipation electric, when Vanessa’s hand brushed against Madeline’s waist, sending a jolt straight through her. The sauna door was locked, the world outside forgotten, and as their bodies pressed closer, the heat became unbearable in all the right ways. What came next would be raw, untamed, and dripping with desire.
