Chapter 1: The Heat of the Day
The sauna was supposed to be a day of relaxation for Lara and me, a chance to unwind in the steamy haze of cedar and sweat. But the moment that tall, dark stranger stepped through the mist, I knew peace was the last thing on Lara’s mind. His skin glistened under the dim lights, muscles rippling with every confident stride. I caught her gaze lingering, her hazel eyes tracing the lines of his body like she was mapping uncharted territory.
‘Damn, he’s a sight, isn’t he?’ I teased, nudging her as we lounged on the wooden bench, towels barely covering our essentials.
Lara smirked, not even pretending to look away. ‘What? I’m just appreciating the view. You telling me you don’t see it?’ Her voice was sharp, playful, daring me to challenge her.
‘I see it. I also see you practically undressing him with your eyes,’ I shot back, chuckling. She laughed, a low, throaty sound, and flicked her gaze back to him. He caught it, his own eyes locking with hers across the room. A slow, knowing smile spread across his face, and I swear I saw her shift, her thighs pressing together under that flimsy towel.
Throughout the day, their silent game continued—stolen glances, sly smiles, the kind of tension that could ignite a fire in a rainstorm. By the time we left for dinner at a nearby restaurant, I thought the sparks might have fizzled. I was wrong. There he was, seated at the bar, a glass of amber liquid in his hand, looking like he owned the damn place.
Before I could say a word, he was on his feet, striding over with the kind of swagger that demanded attention. ‘Mind if I buy you two a drink?’ His voice was deep, smooth as velvet, and his eyes were on Lara like I wasn’t even there.
‘Only if you’ve got something stronger than small talk to offer,’ Lara quipped, her lips curling into a challenge. She leaned forward just enough to let him know she wasn’t backing down.
He grinned, unfazed. ‘Oh, I’ve got plenty to offer. Name’s Kade, by the way. And you are… trouble, I’m guessing?’
‘Lara. And you’re not wrong,’ she fired back, her tone dripping with mischief. I watched, half-amused, half-intrigued, as they bantered like they’d known each other for years. By the time the drinks arrived, the air between them was electric, and I was just a spectator to their game.
Later, in the pulsing heart of a nearby club, Lara and I danced, our bodies pressed close, the bass vibrating through us. I left her on the dance floor for a quick trip to the restroom, but when I returned, there she was—swaying with Kade, his hands grazing her hips, her ass brushing against him with every beat. My gut twisted, not with jealousy, but with something hotter, more primal.
I strode over, pulling her aside to the bar. ‘What’s going on with you and him?’ I asked, my voice low, searching her flushed face.
She didn’t flinch, her eyes blazing with defiance. ‘I’m having fun, Jake. And don’t pretend you don’t see it. You’re not blind. You like watching, don’t you?’ Her words cut through me, sharp and true, and I couldn’t deny the heat stirring in me.
A few more drinks, and we stumbled toward our hotel, the night blurring at the edges. In the dimly lit hotel bar, Kade appeared again, like a shadow we couldn’t shake. His presence was a magnet, pulling Lara closer with every laugh, every casual touch. I watched, sipping my whiskey, as his hand lingered on her arm, as her fingers brushed his chest. The tension was a live wire, crackling between them.
‘Why don’t we take this upstairs?’ Kade suggested, his voice a low rumble, his eyes never leaving Lara. My heart pounded, but I nodded, curious, willing to see where this led.
In his room, the air was thick with anticipation. They danced again, slower this time, bodies pressed tight, hands roaming with intent. Lara’s breath hitched as Kade’s lips found hers, a hungry, claiming kiss that made her moan softly into his mouth. Her hand slid down his chest, lower, until she felt the hard outline of him through his jeans. My own pulse raced as I watched her smirk, her fingers deftly undoing his belt, her confidence unshakable.
‘Let’s see what you’ve got,’ she purred, her voice dripping with command, as she sank to her knees, ready to take control of the night.
