The summer sun blazed down on the rural outskirts of Hinamizawa, a relentless tyrant in a cloudless sky, turning the air into a shimmering haze. Keiichi Maebara, the new kid in town, trudged along a dirt path near the riverbank, his shirt already plastered to his back with sweat. He’d been exploring, trying to get a feel for this sleepy village that felt like a world away from the city, when he stumbled upon a secluded spot by the river. The water sparkled like a sheet of glass, tempting him to strip down and dive in just to escape the heat. He crouched by the edge, splashing cool water on his face, muttering to himself about how he’d never survive a summer out here in the sticks.
“Well, well, what do we have here?” a voice chirped, slicing through the quiet like a blade. Keiichi jolted upright, nearly toppling into the river, as a figure emerged from the trees. Rena Ryūgū stood there, a basket of laundry balanced on her hip, her auburn hair catching the sunlight like fire. She had the kind of smile that could charm a snake—sweet at first glance, but with a sharp edge lurking beneath. “A city boy lost in the wilderness? You look like a puppy who wandered too far from home.”
Keiichi blinked, caught off guard by her sudden appearance and the teasing lilt in her voice. “I-I’m not lost,” he stammered, rubbing the back of his neck as he tried to play it cool. “Just… scoping out the area. You know, getting the lay of the land.”
Rena tilted her head, her smirk widening as she gave him a once-over. “Oh, is that what you’re doing? Looks more like you’re about to melt into a puddle. Didn’t they teach you how to handle a little heat back in the big city, or are you just that delicate?”
“Hey, I can handle plenty!” Keiichi shot back, puffing out his chest in a feeble attempt to match her wit. “This heat’s nothing. I’m just—uh—taking a breather, that’s all.” He took a step forward to prove his point, only to catch his foot on a jagged rock. With a yelp, he flailed, arms windmilling, before crashing into the shallow river with an undignified splash.
Rena doubled over, her laughter ringing out like a bell across the water. “Oh my god, you’re hopeless! Look at you, flopping around like a drowned rat! I didn’t think city boys were this clumsy!”
Keiichi sputtered, wiping water from his face as he glared up at her, cheeks burning with embarrassment. “Yeah, laugh it up. Real nice of you to just stand there gawking.”
Still giggling, Rena set her basket down and extended a hand, her expression a mix of mockery and mischief. “Come on, don’t sulk. I’ll save you, little rat.” Her grip was surprisingly firm as she hauled him up, yanking him to his feet with ease. For a moment, their eyes locked—hers a piercing, unreadable green that sent an unexpected jolt through him. It wasn’t just the cold water making his skin prickle.
She broke the gaze first, stepping back with a playful huff. “Geez, you’re heavier than you look. How about we cool off for real before you keel over again?” Kicking off her sandals, she waded into the river without hesitation, the water lapping at her calves. She glanced over her shoulder, a daring grin on her lips. “Well? You coming, or are you scared of getting wet twice in one day?”
Keiichi hesitated, his heart thumping from more than just the fall. But there was no way he’d let her think he was a coward. “Scared? Please. I was born for this.” He followed her in, the icy water a sharp contrast to the heat blooming in his chest as he tried not to stare at the way she moved with effortless confidence.
Without warning, Rena spun around and splashed him square in the face, her laughter echoing again. “Come on, don’t just stand there like a lump! Stop being such a wimp and fight back!”
“Hey!” Keiichi coughed, wiping water from his eyes as a grin tugged at his lips. Her energy was infectious, pulling him in like a current. He retaliated with a clumsy splash of his own, and soon they were locked in a full-on water war, droplets flying everywhere as they dodged and laughed. By the time they paused, both were soaked to the bone, Rena’s thin shirt clinging to her in ways that made Keiichi’s face burn hotter than the sun overhead. He tried to look anywhere else, but his eyes kept betraying him.
Rena caught his stare and smirked, stepping closer through the water, her movements deliberate. Her voice dropped to a teasing purr, low and dangerous. “Enjoying the view, are we? Didn’t think you had it in you to be so bold, city boy.”
Keiichi’s brain short-circuited, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. “I-I wasn’t—! I mean, it’s not like—uh—!”
She cut him off with a bold laugh, her eyes glinting with amusement. “Relax, I’m just messing with you. But seriously, man up or shut up. You’re not gonna survive out here if you keep tripping over your own tongue.” Her confidence pinned him in place, a predator playing with her prey.
The tension hung thick between them, the river’s gentle current swirling around their legs. Her hand brushed his arm as she adjusted her stance, the touch lingering just long enough to feel deliberate. Keiichi’s pulse raced, every nerve on edge, but before he could muster a response, Rena stepped back with a casual shrug.
“Alright, playtime’s over. I’ve got chores to finish before the day’s done.” She waded toward the shore, grabbing her basket with a fluid motion. Before disappearing into the trees, she tossed him a sly wink over her shoulder. “Catch you later, drowned rat. Try not to fall in again without me around to save you.”
Keiichi stood there in the river, water dripping from his hair, heart pounding like a drum in his chest. As he watched her saunter off, hips swaying with a confidence he couldn’t hope to match, he knew one thing for sure: keeping up with Rena Ryūgū was going to be the wildest challenge of his life. And damn if he wasn’t already hooked.
