The door creaked open, and a figure stepped into the room, bathed in the soft glow of the fairy lights strewn across the ceiling. It was him, the stepfather, invading her personal space once again.

"Checking up on me, are we?" she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm as she looked up from her book. She didn't bother to hide her annoyance, her dark eyes flashing in the dim light.

He tried to make small talk, but she cut him off with a playful insult. "If you're looking for someone to chat with, I'm afraid you'll have to find someone else. I'm not in the mood for your company."
