Nivedya and Gouri lay on their beds, surrounded by textbooks and notebooks, as they attempted to cram for their upcoming exams. Nivedya let out a frustrated sigh as she stared down at the math problem she was working on. "This math problem is a nightmare wrapped in an enigma," she complained, throwing her pencil down onto her desk with a dramatic flourish.
Gouri laughed and tossed a pillow at her best friend. "You're such a drama queen," she said, shaking her head.
Nivedya stuck her tongue out at Gouri before picking her pencil back up and attempting to tackle the problem once again. "If I don't figure this out, I'm going to fail the exam," she muttered.
Gouri rolled her eyes. "You're not going to fail. You're the smartest person I know."
Nivedya snorted. "That's debatable. You're pretty smart yourself."
Gouri's face turned red, and she looked down at her notebook. "I try," she murmured.
Nivedya's eyes narrowed. "Wait a minute," she said, a sly smile spreading across her face. "I know what will distract you from your studies. I'll tell your crush about your secret love for romantic comedies."
Gouri's head whipped up, and she glared at Nivedya. "You wouldn't dare," she hissed.
Nivedya laughed. "I wouldn't? Just watch me."
Gouri's face turned even redder, and she lunged at Nivedya, pillow in hand. "Shut up or I'll make you eat your textbooks!" she yelled.
The two friends were interrupted by the sound of the door opening. They turned to see their fathers, Sankar and Ganesh, standing in the doorway.
"Hey, what are you guys doing in here?" Nivedya asked, sitting up in her bed.
Sankar and Ganesh avoided the question and started making small talk about their daughters' studies. Nivedya and Gouri became suspicious and asked their fathers to leave, but they refused.
As the minutes ticked by, Sankar and Ganesh's behavior became increasingly strange. Nivedya and Gouri started feeling uncomfortable.
Sankar turned to Nivedya and told her that he was proud of her for being such a "strong and independent woman."
Gouri snorted and told her father that she wasn't a woman yet, but Sankar insisted that she was "on her way."
Ganesh turned to Gouri and told her that she was "beautiful and smart, just like her mother."
Gouri blushed and thanked her father, but Nivedya looked at her father with a confused expression.
Sankar noticed Nivedya's confusion and told her that he wanted to talk to her about something important.
Nivedya's heart started racing. She had no idea what her father wanted to talk to her about, but she had a feeling it was something serious.
Sankar cleared his throat and looked at Nivedya. "I know we haven't talked about this before, but I think it's time we had a conversation about...sex."
Nivedya's eyes widened, and she felt her face turn red. She couldn't believe her father was bringing up this topic with her.
Gouri's face turned even redder, and she looked down at her notebook, trying to pretend she wasn't listening.
Sankar continued, "I know it's an uncomfortable topic, but it's important that you know about...protection and consent and all of that."
Nivedya nodded, unable to speak. She was in shock.
Gouri looked up at her father, a curious expression on her face. "What about me?" she asked. "Don't I need to know about this stuff too?"
Ganesh looked at his daughter and nodded. "Of course, you do. We'll have a talk with you too, soon."
Nivedya and Gouri looked at each other, both feeling overwhelmed and grateful for their fathers' honesty.
As Sankar and Ganesh left the room, Nivedya and Gouri lay back down on their beds, their minds racing with thoughts and emotions.
They may have been young, but they were on their way to becoming strong, independent women, ready to take on the world and all of its challenges.
