The humid air of Dhaka clung to Sadiya’s skin as she stepped into the hallowed halls of one of the city’s most prestigious university dormitories. Her heart raced with a cocktail of excitement and nervous energy. Freedom—at long last. No more curfews, no more prying eyes of overbearing relatives. This was her domain now, her chance to carve out a life on her own terms. She dragged her heavy suitcase through the narrow corridor of the girls’ hostel, the wheels squeaking against the worn-out tiles, until she reached her assigned room—Room 304.
The room was small, almost suffocatingly so, with a single bed, a rickety desk, and a wardrobe that looked like it had survived a war. But to Sadiya, it was a palace. She dropped her bag on the bed and started unpacking, humming a tune under her breath. Her fingers moved deftly, folding clothes and stacking books, when the door creaked open without so much as a knock.
Sadiya turned sharply, her dark eyes narrowing. Standing in the doorway were three senior girls, their arms crossed, smirks plastered across their faces. The one in the middle, a tall, wiry girl with a nose ring and a sharp bob cut, stepped forward. Her presence screamed authority—or at least, she thought it did.
“Newbie, huh? I’m Rina, and these are my girls, Tuli and Shreya. We’re the ‘dadas’ of this hall. Welcome to the jungle,” Rina said, her voice dripping with mock sweetness as her eyes scanned Sadiya from head to toe.
Sadiya raised an eyebrow, unfazed. She leaned against the desk, crossing her arms to mirror their stance. “Dadas? Seriously? What is this, a Bollywood gangster flick? I’m Sadiya, by the way. And thanks for the welcome, but I’m kinda busy here.”
Rina’s smirk faltered for a split second, but she recovered quickly, letting out a sharp laugh. “Oh, look at this one. Thinks she’s too cool for school already. Listen up, little miss fresh face, this hall runs on rules. Our rules. You don’t follow, you don’t survive. Simple as that.”
Sadiya tilted her head, a sly grin creeping onto her lips. “Rules, huh? Let me guess, no boys, no late nights, and definitely no fun? Sounds like a prison, not a hostel. Sorry, dadas, but I didn’t come to varsity to bow down to anyone. I make my own rules.”
Tuli, the shortest of the trio with a round face and a penchant for dramatic eyeliner, snickered. “Arey, dekho na, kya attitude hai! You’re way too smart for your own good, darling. Let’s see how long that lasts.”
Shreya, the quiet one with a piercing gaze, finally spoke, her voice low and almost menacing. “You’ve got a mouth on you, Sadiya. Better watch it. We’ve broken bigger egos than yours.”
Sadiya didn’t flinch. Instead, she stepped closer, her tone dripping with defiance. “Break me? Sweetie, you’ll have to try harder than that. I’ve dealt with worse than a bunch of self-proclaimed ‘dadas’ trying to play queen bee. Now, if you’re done with the melodrama, I’ve got unpacking to do. Unless you wanna help fold my lingerie? No? Didn’t think so.”
Rina’s eyes flashed with a mix of amusement and irritation. She leaned in, her voice a whisper but laced with venom. “You’re playing with fire, newbie. We’ll see how long you keep up this act. Let’s go, girls.” With a final glare, the trio turned on their heels and strutted out, their laughter echoing down the corridor.
Sadiya rolled her eyes and shut the door with a little more force than necessary. “What a bunch of clowns,” she muttered to herself, shaking her head as she returned to her unpacking. But deep down, a tiny flicker of unease stirred. Their laughter hadn’t sounded entirely harmless. There was something darker lurking beneath their taunts, a promise of trouble she couldn’t quite ignore.
Still, Sadiya wasn’t one to back down. She’d fought tooth and nail to get here—through endless exams, family expectations, and societal norms that tried to clip her wings. If these so-called ‘dadas’ thought they could intimidate her, they had another thing coming. She smirked to herself as she hung up a bold red dress in her wardrobe. “Let the games begin.”
Meanwhile, in the common room down the hall, Rina and her posse huddled together, their voices hushed but brimming with mischief. “She’s got guts, I’ll give her that,” Rina said, twirling a strand of her hair around her finger. “But guts won’t save her. Let’s teach our little rebel a lesson she won’t forget.”
Tuli grinned, her eyes glinting with excitement. “Oh, this is gonna be fun. What’s the plan, boss?”
Rina’s smirk widened. “Patience, darling. First, we watch. Then, we strike. Sadiya’s about to learn that no one defies the dadas and gets away with it.”
Back in her room, Sadiya sat on her bed, scrolling through her phone, oblivious to the storm brewing just beyond her door. The first day of varsity had already thrown her a curveball, but she was ready to swing. If this was the jungle, as Rina had called it, then Sadiya was no prey. She was a predator in her own right, and she’d make damn sure everyone knew it.
Little did she know, the real test was only just beginning.
