Chapter 1: The First Burn
Mia stormed into the upscale gym on the 45th floor of her corporate tower, her stilettos clicking with the ferocity of a woman who’d just fired three underperforming managers before lunch. Her tailored blazer hugged her curves, but beneath the polished exterior, stress coiled tight in her muscles. She needed release, and not the kind that came from a boardroom victory. That’s where Jake came in—her new personal trainer, all chiseled jawline and rippling biceps, leaning against a treadmill with a smirk that could melt steel.
'Late again, Ms. Executive,' Jake drawled, his voice a low rumble as he crossed his arms, making his muscles flex in a way that was absolutely not accidental. 'Thought you’d bail on me for another PowerPoint orgy.'
Mia rolled her eyes, kicking off her heels and slipping into sneakers. 'Keep dreaming, Jake. I don’t bail on anything—or anyone—worth my time. You’d better make this session count, or I’ll find someone who can keep up.'
His grin widened, a predator sizing up prey, though Mia was no lamb. 'Oh, I’ll make you sweat, darling. Question is, can you handle the heat?'
She stepped closer, her gaze locking with his, the air between them crackling. 'Try me. I eat challenges for breakfast.'
Jake led her to the weights, his hand brushing her lower back as he adjusted her form. The touch was electric, sending a jolt straight through her core. 'Lift with your legs, not your ego,' he teased, his breath hot against her ear. 'Unless you want me to carry you out of here.'
Mia smirked, pushing the barbell up with a grunt. 'You couldn’t handle me even if I came with a user manual. Focus on the workout, pretty boy.'
But focus was a losing battle. Every rep, every bead of sweat rolling down her neck, only heightened the tension. Jake’s eyes lingered on her, dark and hungry, as she powered through squats. 'Damn, woman,' he muttered, almost to himself. 'You’re making this harder than it needs to be.'
'Harder, huh?' Mia shot back, straightening up and wiping her brow, her tone dripping with challenge. 'Didn’t think a guy like you had a limit.'
He stepped in, closing the distance, his voice dropping to a growl. 'Keep talking like that, and I’ll show you just how far I can push.'
Her heart raced, not just from the workout. She could feel the heat radiating off him, the scent of his cologne mixing with the raw edge of exertion. 'Promises, promises,' she taunted, her lips curling into a wicked smile. 'I don’t break easy, Jake. You’ll have to do better than that.'
They moved to the mats for stretches, and as Jake guided her into a deep lunge, his hands firm on her hips, the gym seemed to shrink around them. Her breath hitched, and she caught the glint of raw desire in his eyes. 'You’re playing a dangerous game, Mia,' he warned, his grip tightening just enough to make her pulse spike.
'Danger’s my middle name,' she fired back, her voice husky, daring him to cross the line. 'Question is, are you all talk, or do you actually deliver?'
Jake’s jaw clenched, and in that moment, she knew she’d won—or maybe lost, depending on how you looked at it. The gym was empty now, the late hour leaving them alone with nothing but the hum of the air conditioning and the pounding of their own heartbeats. He pulled her closer, his hand sliding up her thigh, and she didn’t pull away. The promise of something forbidden hung heavy between them, and as their lips hovered inches apart, Mia felt the first stirrings of a fire she wasn’t sure she could—or wanted to—extinguish.
