Throne of Desire

Throne of Desire

Chapter 1: The Unexpected Alliance

The cramped bathroom of the old diner was the last place Riley expected to find herself in a battle of wits and wills. The flickering fluorescent light buzzed overhead, casting a harsh glow on the chipped tiles. She leaned against the sink, arms crossed, her sharp green eyes locked on Jace, her longtime friend and occasional rival. They’d ended up here after a late-night burger run, both needing the single-stall restroom at the same damn time.

‘Look, Jace, I’m not waiting outside while you take your sweet time,’ Riley snapped, her voice dripping with impatience. ‘We’ve shared worse. Let’s just get this over with.’

Jace, all lean muscle and cocky grin, raised an eyebrow as he stood by the toilet, unbuttoning his jeans with deliberate slowness. ‘Oh, come on, Ri. You saying you can’t handle a little proximity? Thought you were tougher than that.’

She smirked, stepping closer, her boots clicking on the tile. ‘I can handle anything you throw at me, pretty boy. Question is, can you keep up without getting distracted?’ Her gaze flicked downward, teasing, challenging.

He laughed, a low, rough sound that sent a shiver down her spine. ‘Distracted? Babe, I’m focused as hell. But if you’re gonna stand there looking like that, I might just have to multitask.’ He gestured to the toilet with a mock bow. ‘Ladies first, or are we sharing the throne?’

Riley rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide the heat creeping up her neck. She shoved past him, her shoulder brushing his chest, and perched on the edge of the toilet seat, daring him to flinch. ‘Fine. But don’t think this means I’m playing nice. You’re still a pain in my ass.’

‘And you’re still a goddamn firecracker,’ Jace shot back, stepping closer, his jeans now hanging low on his hips. The air between them crackled, thick with unspoken tension. Their banter had always been sharp, but tonight, there was an edge to it—a hunger neither could ignore. His eyes darkened as he looked down at her, his voice dropping. ‘You sure you wanna play this game, Ri? ‘Cause I don’t lose.’

She tilted her chin up, defiant, her lips curling into a wicked smile. ‘Bring it, Jace. I’ve never backed down from a challenge, and I’m not starting now.’ Her hand brushed against his thigh as she adjusted her position, deliberate and bold, testing the waters.

The space seemed to shrink, the buzz of the light fading into the background as their breaths synced, heavy and charged. Jace’s hand hovered near her jaw, his thumb brushing the edge of her lip. ‘Fuck, Riley, you’re gonna be the death of me.’

‘Good,’ she purred, her voice a low growl. ‘I like leaving a mark.’ Her fingers curled into the waistband of his jeans, tugging him closer, the heat of his body searing through her. She could feel him, hard and ready, and it ignited something primal in her. Her own pulse raced, a wet heat pooling between her thighs as she locked eyes with him, daring him to make the next move.

Their lips were inches apart, the promise of something explosive hanging in the stale air of that dingy bathroom. Whatever happened next, Riley knew one thing for sure—she was in control, and she was about to make Jace beg for more.
