Matt stood at the grill, the sizzle of the burgers the only sound in the peaceful backyard. The sun beat down on his shoulders, but he didn't mind. It was a perfect summer day.
Daniella, his partner's daughter, lay by the pool, soaking up the sun. Her toned legs were stretched out in front of her, and Matt couldn't help but notice how much she had grown. He quickly pushed the thought away, shaking his head. She was practically family, and he couldn't be having thoughts like that.
"Hey, Grillmaster General," Daniella called out, her voice dripping with playful sarcasm. "You think you can make me a burger that doesn't taste like charcoal?"
Matt rolled his eyes, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "Hey, pool princess," he shot back. "You think you can get off your lazy butt and help me instead of laying there all day?"
Daniella laughed, sitting up and sticking her tongue out at him. "Nice try, but I think I'll stick to my princess duties."
Matt couldn't help but admire her spirit. She was strong and independent, just like her mother. He had always admired that about her.
Daniella stood up, brushing off her swimsuit. "Hey, I have an idea. Want to race me to the other side of the pool?"
Matt raised an eyebrow, a smirk on his face. "You think you can take on the Grillmaster General?"
Daniella rolled her eyes, a grin on her face. "Please, I've been swimming since I was a kid. It'll be an easy win."
Matt shrugged, putting down the spatula. "Alright, you're on. But don't say I didn't warn you."
Daniella jumped into the pool, her arms slicing through the water with ease. Matt dove in after her, his powerful strokes quickly closing the gap between them.
Daniella reached the other side of the pool first, but not by much. She turned around, a surprised look on her face. "Wow, you're actually pretty good," she said, a hint of admiration in her voice.
Matt grinned, treading water. "I have my secrets," he said, winking at her.
Daniella laughed, splashing water at him. "Oh, please. You're just lucky I let you win."
Matt playfully scolded her, splashing water back. "Hey, watch it. I'll have you know, I was the star swimmer on my high school team."
Daniella rolled her eyes, but her grin didn't fade. "Sure, sure. I bet you were the captain of the debate team too."
Matt laughed, diving under the water and swimming towards her. When he resurfaced, he was right next to her. Their bodies brushed against each other, and they both froze, their eyes locked.
Matt quickly pulled away, clearing his throat. "Uh, sorry about that," he said, his face turning red.
Daniella shrugged, a playful smile on her face. "No problem. It was just a little spark," she said, winking at him.
Matt's heart skipped a beat, but he played it cool. "Yeah, just a little spark," he said, trying to sound nonchalant.
Daniella got out of the pool, and Matt couldn't help but stare at her body as she walked away. She noticed and playfully called him out on it.
Matt, embarrassed, quickly looked away and changed the subject. "So, uh, how about those burgers?" he said, picking up the spatula.
Daniella laughed, shaking her head. "You're something else, Matt," she said, a smile on her face.
Matt grinned, flipping the burgers. He couldn't help but feel a spark of electricity every time he was around Daniella. But he knew he had to keep those feelings in check. She was practically family, and he couldn't risk ruining their relationship.
But as they continued to swim and play in the sun, the tension between them continued to build. And Matt couldn't help but wonder if there was more to their relationship than just friendship.
