Chapter 1: Clash on the Field
The small town of Redwood Hollow buzzed with the kind of energy only a Friday night football game could ignite. Lila Voss, the new girl with a sharp tongue and a devil-may-care smirk, leaned against the bleachers, her leather jacket slung over one shoulder. She’d moved here a week ago, and already the whispers followed her—wild, untamed, trouble. She didn’t care. She wasn’t here to make friends. But damn, she couldn’t ignore the pull of the game, or the man at the center of it.
Cade Ryder, Redwood’s golden boy quarterback, was a walking contradiction—arrogant as hell, but with a body carved from sin. Lila watched him command the field, his jersey clinging to sweat-slicked muscles as he barked orders to his team. She rolled her eyes. Typical. Another small-town god who thought the world revolved around his cleats.
After the game, as the crowd dispersed, Lila lingered near the locker room exit, craving a cigarette and a fight. Cade emerged, still in his gear, helmet tucked under his arm, his dark hair damp and tousled. His eyes locked on her, a predatory glint flashing as he sauntered over.
‘Lost, sweetheart?’ he drawled, voice low and cocky. ‘Or just looking for a trophy to take home?’
Lila laughed, sharp and biting, crossing her arms over her chest. ‘Sweetheart? Oh, honey, I’m not the one who needs a pat on the head after throwing a ball around. I’m just here to see if the hype’s worth it. So far? Underwhelmed.’
Cade’s jaw ticked, but his smirk didn’t falter. He stepped closer, the heat of his body cutting through the cool night air. ‘Big talk for someone who doesn’t know the game. Bet I could show you a play or two that’d leave you speechless.’
‘Doubtful,’ she shot back, her green eyes flashing with challenge. ‘I don’t fawn over pretty boys who peak in high school. You’d have to work a hell of a lot harder to impress me.’
He leaned in, his breath hot against her ear, voice dropping to a growl. ‘Harder’s my specialty, darlin’. Name the time and place.’
Lila’s pulse spiked, but she didn’t back down. She tilted her chin up, lips curling into a wicked grin. ‘Careful, quarterback. I bite back. And I don’t play by your rules.’
The tension crackled between them, electric and dangerous. Cade’s gaze dropped to her mouth, his own parting slightly as if he could already taste her. Lila felt the heat pooling low in her belly, her defiance warring with raw, unfiltered want. She hated how much she wanted to shove him against the wall and see if he could back up that smug mouth of his.
‘Field. Midnight,’ she said finally, her voice a dare. ‘Let’s see if you’ve got anything worth tackling.’
Cade’s grin was pure sin. ‘Oh, I’ll tackle you, Voss. And trust me, you’ll be begging for an encore.’
As she turned to walk away, hips swaying with purpose, Lila knew this wasn’t just a game anymore. Midnight couldn’t come fast enough. She could already imagine the clash of their bodies, the sweat, the panting, the raw need that would leave them both dripping and desperate. And she’d be damned if she let him win without a fight.
