Chapter 1: Sparks in the Wilderness
The Fiordland trails had always been our escape, a raw, untamed playground where Fleur and I could shed the mundane weight of our suburban life. Seven great walks under our belts, and now we were deep in the backcountry, where the huts were scarce and the stakes higher. After a grueling 12km trek on the first day, we stumbled upon the first hut around 3pm, only to find it nearly full. Three young bucks—Gus, Nick, and Toby—had already claimed their bunks, their laughter echoing through the tiny shelter. With only one bunk left, we pitched our tent nearby under a still-bright sky, the mild weather a deceptive comfort.
Over dinner, we got to know them. All 21, tall, and built like gods carved from granite, they were rowers from Otago University, brimming with the kind of confidence that comes from youth and strength. Toby, the largest at 6’4, was a towering presence, all lean muscle and big hands that seemed to command attention without trying. They were good guys, funny and relaxed, not a trace of arrogance despite their physiques. 'Bad weather might roll in tomorrow,' Gus warned, his tone casual as he sipped from a flask. We’d seen the forecast too, but nodded, exchanging a glance with Fleur. That night, they drank and bantered while we retreated to our tent, the distant sound of their laughter a strange comfort.
Day two started early, an 18km slog ahead. By lunchtime, the sun still blazed, and we stopped at a rocky stream for a swim. The water was icy, biting into my skin, but refreshing after hours of sweat. Fleur, in her small bikini, looked like a vision—petite, pale, her athletic legs glistening as she waded in. Just as we were about to climb out, the boys appeared, stripping down to their shorts without a second thought. Their bodies were a stark contrast to mine—hard, chiseled, a reminder of my 50 years. I caught Fleur’s gaze lingering a moment too long before she self-consciously climbed out, a hand shielding her small breasts. The boys watched, silent, but their eyes said plenty.
'You call that a swim?' Toby teased, his deep voice cutting through the tension as he dove in, splashing water everywhere. 'Come on, Fleur, show us old-timers how it’s done!'
She smirked, wrapping a towel around herself. 'I don’t need to prove anything to a bunch of overgrown frat boys,' she shot back, her tone sharp but playful.
Nick grinned, shaking water from his hair. 'Fair enough. But you’re missing out. This water’s got nothing on us.'
'Oh, I’m sure,' she replied, arching a brow, her voice dripping with dry wit. 'I’ll stick to surviving the trail, thanks.'
Hours later, the weather turned on us. A bitterly cold gale whipped through the valley, and by the time we reached the second hut, we were shivering, our breath visible in the frigid air. Gus, Nick, and Toby were already there, sprawled out like they owned the place. The hut was tiny, just four bunks, and with the storm raging outside, there was no question of pitching a tent.
'No way you’re sleeping out there,' Toby said, his tone firm, those big hands gesturing to the howling wind beyond the door. 'Take two bunks. I’ll crash on the floor.'
'Don’t be ridiculous,' Fleur snapped, her businesswoman edge cutting through. 'We’re not kicking you out of a bed. We’ll share a bunk. You three take the rest.'
Gus raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing on his lips. 'Sharing, huh? That’s cozy. Sure you two won’t keep us up all night?'
I chuckled, but Fleur’s eyes narrowed, a wicked glint in them. 'Worry about yourself, Gus. I’m more concerned you’ll snore loud enough to bring the roof down.'
Nick laughed, tossing a blanket onto his bunk. 'She’s got you there, mate. But seriously, you sure? It’s tight quarters.'
'I’ve handled tighter,' Fleur quipped, her voice cool as she climbed into the narrow bunk beside me, her body pressed close. The air in the hut crackled, not just from the storm outside, but from something unspoken, something dangerous. As the wind howled and the dim light cast shadows over us, I felt the heat of her skin against mine, her breath steady but charged. The boys settled in, their presence impossible to ignore, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that this night was about to unravel in ways none of us expected.
