The door to Julia's cozy living room creaked open, and in walked John, a middle-aged man with a hint of gray in his hair and a twinkle in his eye. He looked around, taking in the familiar surroundings, as his eyes landed on a small figure sitting on the couch.
"Hey old man, you're early," Megan, Julia's 13-year-old daughter, called out with a playful insult. She was perched on the edge of the couch, her legs crossed and a book in her lap.
John chuckled and responded, "And here I thought I was fashionably late, princess."
Megan rolled her eyes, "Please, John, I'm not a princess. I'm a warrior in training."
John raised an eyebrow, intrigued, "A warrior, huh? What kind of warrior?"
Megan grinned, "The kind that can beat you in a game of chess."
John laughed, "Alright, you're on. But first, where's your mom?"
Megan shrugged, "She's out with her boyfriend. She won't be back until later."
John looked surprised, "Oh, I see. Well, I can wait."
Megan shook her head, "Nah, you don't have to. I can keep you company."
John hesitated, unsure if it was appropriate, but Megan interrupted his thoughts, "I'm bored, John. Teach me something."
John raised an eyebrow, "Like what?"
Megan smirked, "Like how to kiss."
John choked on his own saliva, surprised by her request, "W-what? Megan, I don't think that's a good idea."
Megan pouted, "Why not? I want to learn. I'll never get a boyfriend if I don't know how to kiss."
John tried to protest, but Megan's determination was unwavering. He eventually gave in, but with a condition, "Alright, I'll teach you. But it's just a friendly kiss, okay?"
Megan nodded, excited to learn, "Deal!"
John took a deep breath and leaned in, showing Megan how to pucker her lips and close her eyes. Megan followed his instructions, and they shared a brief, chaste kiss. John pulled away, relieved that it's over, but Megan looked disappointed.
"That's it? That's all there is to it?" she asked.
John chuckled, "For now, yes. You're still young, Megan. There's no rush."
Megan nodded, understanding, "I guess you're right. Thanks, John."
John smiles, "You're welcome, kiddo. Now, how about that game of chess?"
The two of them spent the afternoon playing chess and chatting, with Megan peppering John with questions about relationships and kissing. John answered her patiently, glad that he could be there for her. As the sun began to set, Julia walked in, surprised to find John and Megan deep in conversation.
"Hey, John. I didn't know you were here," she said, a smile on her face.
John grinned, "I was just teaching Megan a thing or two."
Julia raised an eyebrow, "Oh really? What kind of things?"
Megan spoke up, "John was teaching me how to kiss, mom. For when I get a boyfriend."
Julia's eyes widened, but John interjected, "It was just a friendly kiss, Julia. Nothing more."
Julia nodded, relieved, "I'm glad to hear that. But maybe we should leave the kissing lessons for when Megan is a little older, okay?"
John and Megan nodded in agreement, and the three of them spent the rest of the evening laughing and enjoying each other's company. As John left, Julia pulled him aside, "Thanks for keeping Megan company, John. And for being a good sport."
John winked, "Anytime, Julia. I'm always here for you and Megan."
The two friends shared a warm hug, and John left, feeling grateful for the unexpected request and the opportunity to bond with Megan. He knew that she was growing up quickly, and he was glad that he could be there for her, as a friend and a mentor.
