June's legs pumped furiously as she sprinted towards her parents, a wide grin plastered across her face. It had been two long years since she'd seen them, and she couldn't wait to finally be reunited.
Her parents enveloped her in a tight hug, but June noticed a hint of hesitation in her movements. "Hey, guys," she said, trying to keep the excitement in her voice. "I'm so glad to see you!"
But her parents' eyes were drawn to something behind her - a bundle of blankets nestled in the crook of a tree. June followed their gaze and felt her heart clench. She had hoped to break the news to them more gently, but it seemed that fate had other plans.
She led her parents to the treehouse, her heart pounding in her chest. She could feel their confusion and worry radiating off of them in waves, but she didn't know how to begin to explain.
As they stepped inside, June carefully unwrapped the blankets to reveal a tiny, sleeping baby girl. Her parents gasped, their hands flying to their mouths in shock and joy.
"June, what... how...?" her mother stammered, tears brimming in her eyes.
June took a deep breath, steeling herself for the onslaught of questions she knew was coming. "I had some help from Jake, Quint, and Deirk," she said simply.
Her parents hugged her tightly, their relief palpable. "We're so grateful to them," her father said, his voice thick with emotion. "And to you, for being so strong and resilient."
As they walked home, her parents fired off a flurry of questions - how she had managed to eat and take care of a baby on her own, who the father was, how she had bathed and fed the baby, and what her plan was now that she was only 16.
June answered as best she could, her mind racing as she tried to come up with a coherent plan. She knew she couldn't stay in the treehouse forever, but she had no idea where they would go from here.
Her parents teased her playfully, asking if she planned to raise the baby as a "tough girl boss" like herself. June rolled her eyes, but couldn't help the smile that tugged at the corners of her mouth. She was proud of what she had accomplished, and knew she had the support of her family.
At the hospital, the doctors were amazed by June's story, asking how she had delivered the baby with only Jake, Quint, and Deirk present. June shrugged, saying it was no big deal. The doctors exchanged amused glances, knowing they were dealing with a strong-willed and capable young woman.
As they left the hospital, June's parents couldn't resist teasing her again, asking if she planned to teach the baby how to fight zombies and monsters. June laughed, saying of course not. But she did plan to teach her to be strong and independent, just like her.
Her parents nodded in agreement, knowing that their granddaughter was in good hands.
As they finally made it back home, June's mother insisted on making a big dinner to celebrate. June's father pulled her aside, telling her how proud he was of her. He knew life wouldn't be easy, but he had no doubt she'd rise to the challenge.
June smiled, feeling a sense of peace and happiness she hadn't felt in a long time. She knew she was home, and she was ready to face whatever came next.
