Akane kicked off her shoes and let out a sigh of relief as she stepped into the tiny foyer of her apartment. The door clicked shut behind her, and she leaned against it for a moment, savoring the silence. It had been a long day at school, followed by an even longer shift at the diner, and all she wanted was to relax.
But as she padded down the hallway, her shoulders tensed. She could hear the unmistakable sound of her mother's laughter, mingled with the deep voice of her mother's new boyfriend. Great, she thought. Just what I need right now.
She stepped into the living room and saw them sitting on the couch, her mother's arm draped around the shoulders of a man Akane could only assume was Shin. He was older, with a greasy comb-over and a beer belly that threatened to spill over the waistband of his pants. He looked like the kind of guy who thought "teasing" was an acceptable form of flirtation.
"Hey, Akane!" her mother called out, her voice thick with forced cheerfulness. "We were just talking about you."
Akane forced a smile and nodded at Shin. "Hi, Mr. Shin," she said politely.
"Oh, please, call me Shin," he replied, grinning at her. "You're going to be family soon, after all."
Akane's smile faltered, and she felt a twinge of unease. She was pregnant, yes, but she had no intention of getting married anytime soon. She was only eighteen, for crying out loud. She had her whole life ahead of her.
But before she could say anything, her mother spoke up. "So, Akane, we've made a decision about your... situation."
Akane's heart sank. She could tell by the tone of her mother's voice that it wasn't going to be good news.
"We think it's best if you move out of the apartment and in with Nekomaru," her mother continued. "You know, the father of your child."
Akane blinked, trying to process the words. "What?" she finally managed to say. "You want me to move in with Nekomaru?"
Her mother nodded. "Yes, we do. It's for the best, Akane. You'll be able to raise your child together, as a family."
Akane's mind was racing. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. She had always looked up to her mother, always thought of her as strong and independent. But now, here she was, making decisions about Akane's life without even consulting her.
"I can't believe this," Akane muttered, shaking her head.
Shin chimed in, his voice oily and condescending. "You should be grateful, Akane. Not every girl gets the chance to live with the father of her child. It's a rare opportunity."
Akane clenched her fists, fighting the urge to tell him exactly what she thought of him. She knew it wouldn't do any good, though. Her mother was clearly set on this decision, and there was nothing Akane could do to change her mind.
"Fine," she said through gritted teeth. "I'll move in with Nekomaru."
Her mother smiled, looking relieved. "Good. I'm glad we could come to an agreement. I know it's not ideal, but it's for the best."
Akane didn't say anything. She just turned and walked down the hallway to her bedroom, her mind racing. She felt a sense of betrayal, like her mother had just sold her out. She knew she had to make the best of the situation, but it wasn't going to be easy.
She fell onto her bed, exhausted from the day's events. She closed her eyes, trying to push away the heavy feeling in her heart. But it was no use. She knew this was only the beginning of a long, difficult journey.
