The morning sun streamed through the small windows of Akane's cramped apartment, casting a warm glow on the young girl's face as she expertly flipped pancakes on the stove. She was making breakfast for her six younger siblings, a task she had taken on since she could remember.
"Akane, can I have some syrup?" her little brother, Hiroshi, asked, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
"Of course, Hiroshi," Akane replied, pouring a generous amount of syrup onto Hiroshi's plate. She ruffled his hair affectionately before turning back to the stove.
Just as she was about to flip the last pancake, the front door of the apartment swung open, revealing Akane's mother, stumbling in with a man Akane had never seen before. The man couldn't seem to keep his eyes off of Akane, and she felt a chill run down her spine.
"Good morning, everyone," Akane's mother slurred, her words slurring together. She stumbled over to the counter, using it to support herself.
Akane's heart sank as she took in her mother's disheveled appearance. She had hoped that today would be different, that her mother would be sober and able to help her with the children. But it seemed that was not meant to be.
"I have some news," Akane's mother announced, her voice barely above a whisper. "I found out about your pregnancy, Akane."
Akane's heart skipped a beat. She had been trying to keep her pregnancy a secret, knowing that her mother would not take it well.
"I've made a decision," her mother continued, ignoring the gasps of shock from the children. "You'll have to cut back on your waitressing job. It won't be enough to support a baby."
Akane's mind raced. She had been barely making ends meet as it was, and the thought of having even less money was terrifying.
"And," her mother added, "you'll have to move out of the apartment. There won't be enough room for the baby."
Akane's heart felt like it was being ripped out of her chest. She had always known that this day would come, but she had hoped it would be further in the future.
"Thanks for the heads up, mom," Akane said, trying to keep her cool. "I'm sure the library will be a great place to raise a kid."
Her mother, unfazed, continued on about how Akane would have to face the consequences of her actions. Akane's mind drifted off to Nekomaru, the father of her child. She couldn't help but think about his muscular build, a foot taller than her own. She remembered the night they spent together, the passion and heat between them. It was a moment of pure bliss in an otherwise chaotic life.
Akane snapped back to reality as her mother's boyfriend made a lewd comment. She shot him a glare, her eyes filled with fire.
"Back off," Akane said, her voice low and dangerous. "I can take care of myself and my child."
Her mother, annoyed, told her that she was being unreasonable. "You're just a kid yourself, Akane. You can't handle this."
Akane retorted, "I've been handling everything on my own for years, mom. I think I can manage."
Her mother, defeated, stormed off with her boyfriend in tow. Akane was left alone with her thoughts. She looked at her siblings, all of them watching her with wide eyes. She put on a brave face, telling them that everything would be okay.
But deep down, Akane couldn't help but wonder if that was truly the case. The future was uncertain, but one thing was for sure - she would do whatever it took to protect her child.
