Unleashed Desires

Chapter 1: A Stray Connection

Leya trudged back to her dorm room, the weight of her first day at university pressing down on her like a damp, heavy blanket. The city was too loud, too crowded, and she felt more alone than ever. Her baggy black hoodie hung off her shoulders, the wolf tattoo on her arm peeking out as she shoved her hands into her pockets. The piercing in her nose glinted under the flickering hallway light as she muttered to herself, 'Great. First day and I’m already the campus freak.'

She was almost at her door when a soft, pitiful whine sliced through the silence. Leya froze, her heart thudding against her ribcage. She hated dogs—always had. They were unpredictable, messy, and way too clingy. But the sound tugged at something raw inside her, something she couldn’t ignore. Against her better judgment, she crept toward the noise, her boots scuffing against the worn linoleum.

There, curled up in a shadowed corner by the stairwell, was a German Shepherd pup, barely more than a year old. His black fur shimmered even in the dim light, and his deep brown eyes locked onto hers with a mix of fear and desperate hope. Leya’s breath hitched. 'Oh, hell no,' she grumbled, taking a step back. 'I don’t do strays. I don’t even do people.'

But the pup whimpered again, his tail giving a weak wag, and Leya’s resolve cracked like cheap glass. 'Fine, you little manipulator,' she snapped, crouching down but keeping her distance. 'But don’t think this means anything. I’m just… not letting you die out here. That’s it.'

She coaxed him closer with a piece of leftover sandwich from her bag, her voice dripping with sarcasm. 'Come on, mutt. Don’t make me regret this. I’ve got enough baggage without adding a furry disaster to the list.' The pup inched forward, sniffing her hand before gently taking the food, his warm tongue brushing her fingers. A shiver ran down her spine, unbidden and confusing. 'Don’t get any ideas,' she muttered, more to herself than to him.

Back in her tiny dorm room, Leya sat cross-legged on the floor, watching the pup explore with cautious curiosity. She’d named him Shadow—not because she was keeping him, she told herself, but because she needed something to call him while she figured out what to do. 'You’re a pain in my ass already,' she said, her tone sharp but her eyes softening as he tilted his head at her. 'What? You think you’re cute? Newsflash, I’m immune to charm. Human or canine.'

Shadow let out a playful yip, pawing at her knee, and Leya couldn’t help the smirk tugging at her lips. 'Oh, you’re a real comedian, huh? Keep it up and I’ll kick you out faster than you can wag that tail.' But as he nudged closer, his warm fur brushing against her leg, a dangerous heat stirred in her core. She pushed the thought away, horrified. 'Nope. Not going there. You’re a dog, I’m a mess, and this is strictly a rescue mission.'

Yet, as the night deepened, Leya found herself lying on her bed, Shadow curled up at her feet. Her fingers itched to stroke his fur, to feel that warmth again. She bit her lip, her mind racing with forbidden thoughts—thoughts she’d buried deep, ones that made her feel both ashamed and achingly alive. 'You’re gonna be trouble, aren’t you?' she whispered, her voice husky with something she refused to name.

Shadow lifted his head, those soulful eyes meeting hers, and for a moment, the air between them crackled with unspoken tension. Leya’s breath grew shallow, her body betraying her with a flush of heat. She sat up abruptly, running a hand through her messy hair. 'Get a grip, Leya. He’s just a damn dog.' But as she lay back down, her hand lingered near him, fingertips brushing his fur, the promise of something wild and untamed simmering just beneath the surface.
