Chapter 1: The Ghost of Us
Nadia stood on the frigid platform of King’s Cross Station, the December wind biting at her exposed neck as she tugged her scarf tighter. Her dark eyes scanned the crowd, each face a stranger, each opening of the train doors a fresh stab of disappointment. She’d sent that message to James hours ago, baring her soul in a way she hadn’t since their messy breakup in 2024. No reply. Just the cold, hard silence of being left on read. Her breath fogged in the air as she muttered to herself, 'Coward. Always was.'
She shifted her weight, her sleek black boots clicking against the concrete. Nadia wasn’t the type to wait for anyone, not anymore. At thirty, she’d built a life of steel and ambition, a virgin by choice, not by chance—her body a fortress no man had ever breached. But James… he’d always been the crack in her armor. The single father with a smirk that could unravel her, the man who’d once made her believe in something softer. Until he didn’t.
The platform announcer crackled through the speakers, signaling her train’s imminent arrival. Her heart clenched. 'Last chance, asshole,' she whispered under her breath, eyes darting to the entrance one final time. Nothing. Just the hum of London’s chaos and the ache of rejection settling into her bones. She’d wanted proof—proof she still mattered, proof their late-night texts after a year of no contact weren’t just empty words. Instead, she got silence. 'Fine,' she hissed, squaring her shoulders. 'I don’t need you to choose me. I choose myself.'
But as she turned to board, a familiar voice sliced through the din. 'Nadia.'
She froze, her pulse hammering. Slowly, she pivoted, and there he was—James, all tousled dark hair and piercing blue eyes, his leather jacket slung over a crisp white shirt. He looked like he’d run here, chest heaving slightly, a shadow of stubble dusting his jaw. 'You’re late,' she snapped, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. 'Or did you just come to watch me leave?'
He stepped closer, the scent of his cologne—woodsy, maddening—hitting her like a memory. 'I’m here, aren’t I?' he shot back, his tone low, almost a growl. 'You think I’d let you slip away again without a fight?'
'Fight?' She laughed, bitter and bright, crossing her arms. 'You didn’t even reply, James. You left me standing here like some desperate fool. What kind of fight is that?'
His jaw tightened, and he took another step, closing the gap until she could feel the heat radiating off him. 'I was scared, alright? Scared of what seeing you would do to me. But I’m here now, Nadia. And I’m not letting you board that train without hearing me out.'
Her eyes narrowed, but her body betrayed her, a flush creeping up her neck. 'You’ve got two minutes before I’m gone. Make it count.'
He smirked, that damn smirk she’d never forgotten. 'Two minutes? I can do a lot in two minutes.' His voice dipped, suggestive, and her breath hitched despite herself. 'I’ve missed you. Missed the way you challenge me, the way you don’t take my shit. I’ve been a coward, yeah, but I’m done running. Tell me you don’t feel this pull between us, and I’ll walk away.'
Nadia’s lips parted, her resolve wavering as his gaze bore into her. She hated how her body reacted, how a fire sparked low in her belly. 'Feel it? I feel pissed, James. But…' She hesitated, her voice softening just a fraction. 'Maybe I’ve missed fighting with you too.'
His hand reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face, his touch electric. 'Then don’t go. Stay. Let me show you I’m serious this time.'
The train doors hissed open behind her, but her feet didn’t move. Her eyes locked with his, a storm of anger and desire brewing. 'Show me how serious,' she challenged, her voice a dare, her heart racing as his fingers lingered on her cheek, trailing down to her jaw. She could feel the tension coiling tighter, her skin prickling with anticipation. Whatever came next, she knew it wouldn’t be gentle—it would be raw, messy, and all-consuming, just like them.
