Persephone, her light brown hair pulled back into a loose bun, hummed to herself as she tended to her flourishing garden. The Underworld, despite its reputation, was home to some of the most beautiful and vibrant plants and flowers she had ever seen. She ran her fingers gently over the petals of a nearby rose, marveling at its softness and the way it seemed to glow in the dim light.
But her peaceful moment was interrupted by a sudden knock on the door. Persephone startled, dropping the trowel she had been using to plant seeds. She hurried to answer it, expecting Hades or perhaps a messenger from the surface world.
Instead, she found her mother, Demeter, standing on the doorstep, her green eyes wide with shock and disbelief.
"Mother!" Persephone exclaimed, trying to hide her growing belly with a large flower pot. "What are you doing here?"
Demeter swept past her, her gaze sweeping over Persephone, taking in her rounder figure and the faint glow of motherhood that surrounded her.
"I came as soon as I heard," Demeter said, her voice tight with anger. "I can't believe you would do something so foolish, Persephone. You know what Hades is like, yet you still let him impregnate you."
Persephone couldn't help but laugh at her mother's words. "Mother, you make it sound like I had no choice in the matter. Hades may be the lord of the Underworld, but he's also quite charming when he wants to be."
Demeter's eyes narrowed. "Charming, indeed. He's a crafty Underworld lord, and you fell for his tricks."
Persephone smiled, placing a hand on her belly. "Yes, I did. And I'm glad I did. I'm having twins, Mother. A boy and a girl."
Demeter's expression softened, and she reached out to touch Persephone's belly, feeling the movement of the twins beneath her hand. "They're strong, Persephone. I can feel it."
Persephone beamed with pride. "Yes, they are. They're already showing signs of their powerful heritage."
Demeter sighed, sinking onto a nearby couch. "I've been unfair to Hades, I see that now. I'm happy for you, Persephone. And for your growing family."
Persephone sat down next to her mother, taking her hand in her own. "Thank you, Mother. That means the world to me."
Demeter smiled, her eyes glistening with tears. "I'll stay for as long as you'll have me. We can celebrate the upcoming births with a feast."
Persephone's face lit up. "I'd like that. It will be a happy occasion, one that we can all enjoy together."
And so, the two women spent the rest of the day laughing, sharing stories, and preparing for the arrival of the twins. The Underworld, for once, was filled with joy and light, and Persephone couldn't have been happier.
