Persephone’s cozy home was always filled with the comforting scents of fresh flowers and baking bread. It was her sanctuary, a place where she could escape from the worries of the world and lose herself in her art. On this particular day, she was holed up in her sunlit studio, humming to herself as she painted.
She was so absorbed in her work that she didn’t hear the knock on the door at first. When the sudden noise startled her, she accidentally flicked a bit of paint onto her canvas.
“Dammit,” she muttered under her breath, before setting her paintbrush down and making her way to the front door.
When she opened it, she was surprised to find her mother, Demeter, standing on the doorstep with a disapproving frown.
Demeter’s eyes widened as she took in Persephone’s eight-month pregnant belly. “Persephone, what have you done?” she exclaimed.
Persephone rolled her eyes, placing a hand on her hip. “What does it look like I’ve done, Mother?” she retorted.
Demeter’s gaze softened as she reached out to touch Persephone’s belly. “You’re having a baby... or two?” she asked, her voice filled with disbelief.
Persephone grinned, nodding. “Yes, a boy and a girl. And before you ask, no, Hades and I are very happy together.”
Demeter huffed, crossing her arms. “I still don’t trust that underworld scoundrel,” she muttered.
Persephone laughed, leading her mother inside. “Well, you’ll just have to get used to the idea, because they’re coming whether you like it or not.”
Demeter sighed, taking a seat at the kitchen table. “I suppose I can’t change your mind,” she conceded.
Persephone smiled, pouring them both a cup of tea. “Nope. But you can be a part of their lives, if you want.”
Demeter’s expression softened even more. “Of course I do, Persephone. I just want what’s best for you.”
Persephone chuckled, patting her mother’s hand. “I know, Mother. And I want what’s best for me too. And that includes Hades.”
Demeter sighed, taking a sip of her tea. “I’ll try my best to accept him, for your sake,” she said.
Persephone beamed, leaning down to give her mother a kiss on the cheek. “Thank you, Mother. That means the world to me.”
As the two women sat and chatted, the tension between them slowly began to dissipate. It was clear that Demeter still had her reservations about Persephone’s relationship with Hades, but she was willing to put aside her doubts for the sake of her daughter and her soon-to-be grandchildren.
And Persephone was grateful for her mother’s support, even if it came with a side of disapproval. She knew that Demeter would always have her back, no matter what. And that was all that really mattered.
