Nick sighed, staring down at the textbook splayed open on his lap. The words swam before his eyes, a jumbled mess of letters and numbers that refused to make sense. He glanced at the clock, wincing at the time. Only an hour left until his parents returned home from their date night, and he was no closer to finishing his homework.
Across the room, Kaylee, the five-year-old girl he was babysitting, sat on the floor, her coloring book and crayons forgotten. She eyed Nick with curiosity, her head cocked to the side.
"Nick," she called out, her voice sweet and innocent.
He glanced over at her, forcing a smile. "Yeah, Kaylee?"
She scooted closer to him, her eyes wide and curious. "What are you doing?"
Nick hesitated, wondering how to explain his homework to a kindergartner. "I'm studying for a test," he finally said.
Kaylee's face fell. "Oh." She paused, then asked, "Can I help?"
Nick chuckled, amused by her determination. "No, Kaylee, you wouldn't understand."
Kaylee's eyes narrowed, and she sat up straighter. "I'm a big girl now," she insisted.
Nick raised an eyebrow, intrigued by her confidence. "Oh yeah? Prove it," he said, deciding to have a little fun.
Kaylee's face lit up, and she eagerly nodded. "Okay! What do I have to do?"
Nick thought for a moment, then decided to test her intelligence. "Alright, Kaylee. What's two plus two?"
Kaylee didn't even have to think about it. "Four!" she exclaimed.
Nick was impressed. "Okay, okay. What's the capital of France?"
Kaylee's face scrunched up in concentration, then she smiled. "Paris!"
Nick laughed. "No, Kaylee, that's the city. The capital is Paris, but the country is France."
Kaylee pouted but then brightened. "Oh, I know! What's the biggest animal in the world?"
Nick was surprised. "Wow, Kaylee. You're really smart. The biggest animal in the world is the blue whale."
Kaylee beamed with pride. "See, I'm a big girl!"
Nick smiled, deciding to teach her something new. "Alright, Kaylee. Since you're such a big girl, I'm going to teach you about body parts."
Kaylee's eyes widened with excitement. "Okay!"
Nick pointed to different parts of his body, naming them. "This is my head, my arms, my legs, my stomach."
Kaylee repeated the names, giggling at the sound of some of them.
Nick felt a little mischievous and pointed to his crotch. "And this is my dick."
Kaylee's face scrunched up in confusion. "What's a dick?"
Nick hesitated, realizing he needed to teach her about private parts. "Well, Kaylee, a dick is a private part. It's something that we don't touch inappropriately."
Kaylee still looked confused. "Oh. Is it like my pee-pee?"
Nick realized that Kaylee might not understand the concept of private parts. "No, Kaylee. A dick is what boys have, and a pee-pee is what girls have. It's the difference between boys and girls."
Kaylee listened intently, her eyes wide. "Oh, I see. Can I touch it?"
Nick was taken aback, quickly telling her no. "No, Kaylee, it's not appropriate."
Kaylee pouted, looking disappointed. "Why not?"
Nick tried to think of a way to explain it. "It's something that grown-ups do, Kaylee. When you're a grown-up, you'll understand."
Kaylee still looked disappointed. "Can I try when I'm a grown-up?"
