Nick slouched on the couch, rubbing his eyes as he tried to stay awake. Babysitting his five-year-old neighbor, Kaylee, was turning out to be more exhausting than he had anticipated. She was a ball of energy, never seeming to run out of steam. He stifled a yawn as she climbed up next to him, her eyes wide and curious.
"Nick, why are you so tired?" she asked, her tiny voice barely above a whisper.
He ruffled her hair playfully. "I was up all night protecting the house from intruders," he joked.
Kaylee's eyes widened even more, and she looked around the room, her small body tensing. "Are they gone now?" she asked, her voice quivering.
Nick smiled, trying to hide his amusement. "Yes, they're gone. But they might come back," he said, trying to sound serious.
Kaylee's face lit up, and she jumped off the couch. "I want to help protect the house!" she declared.
Nick raised an eyebrow. "Really? And how do you plan on doing that?"
Kaylee looked around the room, her eyes scanning for any potential threats. "I'll keep watch!" she said, her voice filled with determination.
Nick couldn't help but be charmed by her enthusiasm. "Alright, you can be my lookout. But you have to promise to stay quiet and not distract me."
Kaylee nodded eagerly, and the two of them spent the next hour "guarding" the house. Kaylee asked him questions about himself, and Nick found himself opening up to her in a way he never had before. He told her about his love for basketball and how he hoped to be on the school team next year. He even told her about his dream of becoming a professional athlete.
As they talked, Nick began to feel a strange attraction towards Kaylee. He quickly shook off the feeling, reminding himself that she was just a child. But Kaylee seemed to notice his discomfort and teasingly asked if she was saying something wrong.
Nick laughed it off. "No, of course not. I'm just tired, that's all."
As the night wore on, Kaylee became more and more restless. She begged Nick to tell her a story to help her fall asleep. Nick hesitated at first, not sure if he was up to the task. But Kaylee's eyes were wide with anticipation, and he couldn't bring himself to say no.
He cleared his throat and began to tell a made-up story about a brave knight and a magical kingdom. Kaylee's eyes never left his face, her small body entranced by the tale. Nick found himself getting carried away, his voice lowering as he described the knight's victory.
"And the knight lived happily ever after," he finished, his voice barely above a whisper.
Kaylee clapped her hands together, her eyes shining with excitement. "That was the best story ever, Nick!"
Nick smiled, feeling a warmth spread through his chest. "I'm glad you enjoyed it, Kaylee."
But as he got up to leave, Kaylee's tiny voice stopped him. "Nick, what does 'blowjob' mean?"
Nick froze, his mind racing. He couldn't believe he had just told a five-year-old that word. He tried to backtrack, but Kaylee insisted, her tiny face filled with curiosity.
With a sinking feeling, Nick explained the meaning of the word to her, his heart heavy with guilt. He promised himself that he would be more careful with his words in the future. Kaylee looked at him with confusion, and Nick realized that he had a lot to learn about being a responsible babysitter.
But as he tucked her into bed, he couldn't help but feel a deep affection for the little girl. She was strong, controlling, and direct, just like the female characters he admired. And he knew that he would do anything to protect her, even from himself.
