Nick grumbled as he glanced down at the innocent face of his five-year-old neighbor, Kaylee. "What now, Kaylee?" he asked, trying to keep the annoyance out of his voice.
Kaylee followed him around the house, her curious blue eyes taking in everything he did. "Nick, what are you doing?" she asked, as he reached up to adjust the blinds.
"I'm trying to get some peace and quiet, Kaylee. Can't you see I'm busy?" he replied, turning on the TV and flopping down on the couch.
But Kaylee was undeterred. She climbed up onto the couch next to him, her small body pressing against his side as she stared at the flickering images on the screen.
Nick sighed, growing impatient. "You're such an annoying little brat, Kaylee," he said, playfully ruffling her hair.
Kaylee's response was immediate. She stuck her tongue out at him and retorted, "You're a stupid head, Nick!"
Nick couldn't help but laugh at her feistiness. "Alright, alright. You want to play, huh?" he said, an idea forming in his mind.
He pointed to his crotch, his voice serious. "But you can't say certain words without knowing what they mean, Kaylee. Like this one - dick."
Kaylee's confusion was clear. "What's a dick, Nick?" she asked, her brow furrowed.
Nick tried to keep a straight face. "It's a part of my body, Kaylee. And you can't say it without knowing what it means."
Kaylee's eyes widened. "Can I see it, Nick?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Nick was taken aback. "Uh, no, Kaylee. That's not appropriate," he stammered.
But Kaylee's innocence and persistence wore him down. Reluctantly, he undid his pants and showed her.
Kaylee's eyes widened even further. "Can I touch it, Nick?" she asked, her small hand reaching out towards him.
Nick realized he was in over his head. "No, Kaylee. You can't touch it without consequences," he said, quickly pulling his pants back up.
Kaylee looked at him, her eyes wide and curious. "What kind of consequences, Nick?" she asked.
Nick shook his head. "Never mind, Kaylee. Let's just watch TV, okay?" he said, changing the subject and hoping to distract her.
But he couldn't shake the feeling that he had crossed a line. And as he glanced at Kaylee, he couldn't help but wonder if he had made a mistake.
