When Ms. J Checked on Lake: A Twist of Fate, Identical Faces, and One Too Many Pills

Chapter One: The Unfortunate Bathroom Incident

Lake stood in front of the mirror, her brown hair falling in loose waves around her shoulders. She had always been compared to her identical twin brother, Lucas, and it seemed like her parents loved him more. She sighed and opened the medicine cabinet, her eyes scanning the contents. An empty pill bottle caught her eye and an idea began to form in her mind.

She pretended to take the "pills" and acted like she was about to swallow them, but she stopped and looked at herself in the mirror, a determined look in her eyes. Suddenly, the bathroom door opened, and Ms. J, the teacher, walked in. She was there to check on Lake, as she had been in the bathroom for too long.

Ms. J found Lake on the floor, the empty pill bottle next to her. She gasped and quickly checked Lake's pulse. Lake opened her eyes and smirked at Ms. J, "Gotcha! I'm not really dead."

Ms. J looked relieved but also annoyed, "Lake, that's not funny. You scared me."

Lake sat up, "I'm just trying to get some attention. No one cares if I'm gone."

Ms. J put her hands on her hips, "That's not true, Lake. I care. And your parents care, they just don't know how to show it."

Lake rolled her eyes, "Sure, Jan."

Ms. J raised an eyebrow, "Excuse me?"

Lake grinned, "You know, like the meme. You're being too dramatic."

Ms. J sighed, "Well, I'm here now. Let's get you up and talk about what's been going on."

Lake stood up, "Fine, but I'm not making any promises."

Ms. J smiled, "That's okay. I'll take what I can get."

Lake and Ms. J sat down on the bathroom floor, Lake leaning against the bathtub and Ms. J facing her.

Lake looked down at her hands, "I just feel like no one cares about me. Lucas gets all the attention, and my parents are always working. I'm just here, alone."

Ms. J put a hand on Lake's shoulder, "I care about you, Lake. And I know your parents care about you too. They're just busy, that's all. They love you, I promise."

Lake looked up at Ms. J, "But how do I know that? How can I be sure?"

Ms. J smiled, "Well, for one, they sent me here to check on you. They care about you, they just don't always know how to show it. And I'm here for you too, Lake. I'm always here if you need someone to talk to."

Lake sighed, "I guess I just need to figure out how to show them that I need them too."

Ms. J nodded, "That's a great start. And I'll be here to help you every step of the way."

Lake smiled, "Thanks, Ms. J. I really mean it."

Ms. J stood up, "Okay, let's get you back to class. And remember, I'm always here for you."

Lake stood up and followed Ms. J out of the bathroom, a new determination in her eyes. She may not have all the answers, but she knew she had someone on her side. And that was a start.
