The forge was usually bustling with activity, but today it was eerily quiet. The sound of metal striking metal echoed through the room, and I followed it to its source. There, I found Hephaestus, the god of fire and metalworking, hammering away at a piece of metal with a fierce determination.
"Well, well, well, what do we have here?" I teased, approaching him with a playful grin. "A metalhead who's forgotten how to take a break?"
Hephaestus looked up, startled, and I noticed the sadness in his eyes. I raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. "What's wrong, Hephaestus? You look like someone just stole your favorite hammer."
He sighed, setting down his tools. "It's nothing, Cady. Just a stupid misunderstanding with Aphrodite and Ares."
I tried to hold back my laughter at the absurdity of the situation. "Let me guess, they accused you of being infertile again?"
Hephaestus nodded, looking defeated. "It's embarrassing, Cady. I'm the god of fire and metalworking, not fertility. But still, it hurts to be reminded of my...shortcomings."
I wrapped my arms around him, pulling him into a hug. "You're more than just your ability to father children, Hephaestus. You're kind, and strong, and talented. Don't let anyone make you feel less than."
He tensed up at first, unsure of how to react to my unexpected affection. But soon, he relaxed into my embrace, grateful for the support. I could feel his heart beating against mine, and I couldn't help but notice how good it felt to hold him.
Suddenly, I felt a strange sensation in my belly. I pulled away from Hephaestus, my eyes wide with shock. "Hephaestus, I-I'm pregnant."
His eyes widened in disbelief. "What? But how? I thought-"
I placed his hand on my belly, feeling the life growing inside of me. "I know, Hephaestus. But here we are, infertile no more."
He was stunned, but soon a smile spread across his face. He pulled me into another hug, whispering soothing words in my ear. "I'll be here for you, Cady. I promise."
We decided to keep the news of my pregnancy a secret, only telling a select few gods and goddesses. We chose Her, Zeus, Athena, Dionysus, and Artemis, knowing they could be trusted to keep our secret.
The two of us spent the rest of the day in the forge, making plans for the future and enjoying each other's company. As I left the forge, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. I knew the road ahead wouldn't be easy, but I was ready for whatever came my way.
I smiled to myself, already looking forward to the next chapter of my and Hephaestus' unlikely love story.
