Davina slowly opened her eyes, the sound of Mikey's laughter floating in from the next room. She stretched, every muscle in her body protesting as she moved. The events of the previous night came rushing back to her, and she sat up abruptly, her heart racing.
She was in Gabriel's bed, naked.
Panic set in as she tried to remember what had happened. Had they really slept together? She couldn't remember anything after the wine had started flowing.
The door to the bedroom opened, and Gabriel walked in, looking disheveled and hungover. He stopped in his tracks when he saw her sitting up in his bed, her eyes wide with panic.
"Davina," he said, his voice hoarse.
She pulled the sheets up to cover herself, her cheeks flaming. "What happened last night?" she demanded, her voice shaking.
Gabriel ran a hand through his hair, looking guilty. "We, uh, we slept together," he admitted.
Davina's eyes narrowed. "Did I consent to that?" she asked, her voice cold.
Gabriel looked at her, his eyes pleading. "Yes," he said. "It was consensual. I swear."
Davina didn't believe him. She couldn't remember anything, and she felt violated. She threw the sheets off and stood up, gathering her clothes from the floor.
"I can't work for you anymore," she said, her voice shaking with anger. "I need to find a new job."
Gabriel looked at her, his eyes filled with guilt. "Davina, please," he said. "Let's talk about this."
But Davina was already dressing, her movements quick and jerky. She didn't want to talk about it. She needed to get away from him.
Gabriel tried to apologize, but Davina cut him off. She didn't want to hear it. She couldn't believe she had let herself get into this situation.
"I'm not a prostitute," she spat, her eyes flashing. "Don't offer to pay me off."
Gabriel looked at her, his eyes filled with regret. "I'm sorry," he said. "I didn't mean it like that."
Davina ignored him, finishing dressing in silence. She turned to leave, but Gabriel stopped her, his hand on her arm.
"Please, let me drive you home," he said, his voice soft.
Davina hesitated, but she didn't want to be alone with him. She nodded, and Gabriel let out a breath of relief.
They drove in silence, the tension between them palpable. Gabriel tried to make small talk, but Davina ignored him, her arms crossed over her chest.
Finally, Gabriel reached over and took her hand. Davina pulled away, her eyes flashing.
"Don't touch me," she said, her voice cold.
Gabriel pulled his hand back, his shoulders slumping. "I'm sorry," he said. "I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."
Davina didn't say anything, her anger simmering just below the surface. Gabriel tried to make amends, offering to take her and Mikey on a vacation. Davina was skeptical, but she agreed to think about it.
When they reached her apartment, Davina got out of the car without saying goodbye. Gabriel watched her go, feeling guilty and helpless. He knew he had messed up, but he didn't know how to fix it.
Davina slammed the door shut, cutting off his view of her. Gabriel sighed, putting the car in drive and pulling away from the curb. He had a lot of work to do if he wanted to win Davina back.
