Nick flopped down onto the couch, his legs dangling over the armrest as he complained into the phone. "Why do I have to babysit tonight? I'm fourteen, not four. I should be out with friends, not stuck at home watching some little kid."
His friends laughed on the other end of the line, teasing him about his babysitting duties. Nick rolled his eyes, but he couldn't help but smile. They didn't understand the responsibility that came with being the oldest sibling.
Just as he was about to end the call, the doorbell rang. Nick groaned, tossing the phone onto the couch as he went to answer the door.
Standing on the other side was a small, quiet girl with wide eyes and a shy smile. "Hi, Nick. I'm Kaylee. Your mom said I should come over around six?"
Nick plastered a forced smile on his face, trying to hide his annoyance. "Hey, quiet mouse. Come on in. I'm sure we're going to have a blast tonight."
Kaylee's eyes lit up at the playful insult, and she followed Nick into the living room. He tried to entertain her with cartoons, but Kaylee seemed uninterested. She wandered off to explore the house, her curiosity getting the best of her.
Nick found her in his room, her eyes fixed on a photo of his crush on his nightstand. "Hey, little snoop. What are you doing in here?"
Kaylee turned to him, her cheeks flushed. "I'm sorry. I was just looking around. Who's that girl in the picture?"
Nick felt his face heat up, embarrassed that Kaylee had found his secret crush. "That's nobody. Just a friend from school."
Kaylee raised an eyebrow, sensing his embarrassment. "She must be pretty special if she makes you blush like that."
Nick tried to regain his composure, feeling flustered by Kaylee's directness. "Fine, she's my crush. Happy now?"
Kaylee grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "I knew it. You're just too shy to admit it. Want to play a game of truth or dare to take your mind off of it?"
Nick felt a surge of excitement at the suggestion. He had always wanted to play truth or dare, but never had the guts to ask. "Sure, why not?"
Kaylee went first and chose "dare." Nick, feeling mischievous, dared her to touch her nose with her tongue. Kaylee succeeded, giggling at the silly challenge.
When it was Nick's turn, he chose "truth" and Kaylee asked if he had ever kissed a girl. Nick felt his face heat up again, embarrassed at his lack of experience. "No, I haven't."
Kaylee's eyes widened, a twinkle of excitement in them. "Well, then I can help you practice. It's just a game, after all."
Nick was shocked and amused by Kaylee's boldness. He had never thought of her as anything more than a little kid, but now he was seeing her in a different light. "You're crazy, you know that? Fine, I'll play along."
Kaylee took charge, guiding Nick through the process with a gentle touch. Nick was surprised at how natural it felt, how easy it was to follow Kaylee's lead.
As the game continued, Kaylee dared Nick to show her something "really cool." Nick felt a surge of adrenaline, knowing exactly what he wanted to show her.
He grabbed a skateboard from his closet, his heart racing as he showed Kaylee how to balance on it. She looked up at him with admiration, calling him "brave and strong."
Nick was surprised and flattered by the turn of events. He had never thought of himself as brave or strong, but Kaylee saw something in him that he didn't see in himself.
As the night went on, Nick found himself enjoying Kaylee's company. She was strong, controlling, and direct - everything he admired in a person.
He realized that babysitting wasn't so bad after all. In fact, it might just be the most exciting thing he had ever done.
