Chapter 1: The Courtyard's Heat
The castle's courtyard was a canvas of twilight, painted in deep oranges and purples as the sun dipped below the horizon. I sat on the cold stone bench, Adrian’s sweater draped over my shoulders, the woody scent of his cologne wrapping around me like a secret. His arm rested along the back of the bench, not touching me, but close enough that I could feel the warmth radiating from him. My heart hadn’t settled since we left the Great Hall, and now, with the silence of the evening pressing in, it thrummed even louder.
“You’re awfully quiet,” Adrian teased, his voice low, a playful edge cutting through the stillness. He tilted his head, those sharp brown eyes glinting with mischief. “What’s going on in that brilliant head of yours? Thinking about Longbottom’s plants?”
I smirked, rolling my eyes as I shifted to face him. “Hardly. I’m just… taking in the moment. And for the record, Neville’s knowledge of Venomous Tentacula is more thrilling than you’d think.”
He laughed, a rich sound that seemed to echo off the stone archway above us. “Oh, I’m sure. But I bet I can be more thrilling than a carnivorous plant.” His gaze dropped briefly to my lips, then flicked back up, daring me to challenge him.
“Is that so?” I shot back, arching a brow. “Big words, Adrian. You planning to prove it, or just talk a good game?” My voice was steady, sharp, matching his energy. I wasn’t about to let him think he had the upper hand.
He grinned, leaning in just a fraction, the space between us shrinking. “Careful what you ask for. I don’t back down from a challenge.” His tone dipped, turning velvet-smooth, and I felt a spark ignite low in my stomach. The air was cooler now, but my skin prickled with heat, the weight of his stare pinning me in place.
“Then don’t,” I countered, my voice a whisper but laced with steel. I held his gaze, refusing to flinch, even as my pulse raced. “Show me.”
For a heartbeat, neither of us moved, the tension coiling tighter, electric. Then, slowly, deliberately, his hand slid from the bench to my shoulder, fingers brushing the edge of the sweater—his sweater—as if testing the waters. “You’re trouble, you know that?” he murmured, his thumb grazing my collarbone, sending a shiver down my spine that had nothing to do with the autumn chill.
“Says the one who dragged me out here,” I quipped, but my breath hitched as his touch lingered, warm and firm. I shifted closer, not because I couldn’t resist, but because I wanted to. I wanted to see how far this game would go. “What’s your next move, then?”
His smirk widened, and his other hand found my waist, pulling me just near enough that I could feel the heat of his body through the thin fabric of my skirt. “Oh, I’ve got plenty of moves,” he said, voice rough now, dripping with promise. “But I’m more curious about yours.”
My lips parted to fire back another retort, but before I could, he closed the distance, his mouth crashing into mine with a hunger that stole the words right out of me. The kiss was fierce, unapologetic, and I met it with equal force, my hands sliding up to grip his shoulders, nails digging in just enough to make him growl against my lips. The taste of him—salt and something darker, intoxicating—flooded my senses, and I pressed closer, the stone bench forgotten beneath us.
His hands roamed, one slipping under the sweater to find the curve of my waist, the other tangling in my hair as he deepened the kiss, his tongue teasing mine in a way that made my core ache. I wasn’t some wilting flower; I pushed back, nipping at his bottom lip, drawing a sharp hiss from him that only fueled the fire building between us. My skin was flushed, my breath coming faster, and I could feel the hard press of him against me, a silent promise of what was to come.
“Damn,” he panted, pulling back just enough to rest his forehead against mine, his eyes dark and wild. “You’re gonna be the death of me.”
I laughed, low and breathless, my fingers still curled into his shirt. “Good. Let’s see how long you last.” My words were a challenge, a dare, and as his grip tightened on my hips, I knew the night was only just beginning.
